We did square dancing, waltz, salsa, and tango in 6th grade. I thought I would hate it, until I got paired with the hottest girl in my class.

I think it's good for kids if for no other reason than to teach them how to not be completely awkward around girls

This thread has me LMAO. We had to square dance in the 8th grade and I got paired with this over-weight girl named Hilda. We are dancing along and all of a sudden she asked me " do you love me?"
I don't remember what I said but it scared the shite out of me.
Thanks OP for rekindling that happy memory...NOT !!!!

Thank you. I figured SOME former square dancer would recognize true genius.

Seems corny as hell, but maybe it teaches them to follow directions and work with a "partner" or a group?

Following instructions
Listening skills
Team work
Cultural diversity (inner city kids learning a country dance)
Making a connection to a text (maybe it was a popular dance within a story)
Exercise/coordination/rhythm

....there are many reasons why a student would do this in elementary school...

Because you get to touch the hand of the hottest girl in school. Even for that quick .5 second hand off.

I never did square dancing in school. I would have thought it was incredibly lame at the time. Now, it seems like it would be kind of a retro-cool thing to learn.
