Should someone else besides Bedoya start vs Germany?

Opinions and thoughts on Bedoya's play, and does it warrant him a start against the Germans?

IMO, I think we could go with someone else. Maybe Johannsson up top with Dempsey and slide back to the diamond formation.

If we are tied or in the lead late in the match against Germany -- 70' mark -- then I would want him back on the field and with a ton of energy for those final 20'.

What is everyone else's opinion?

Random player ratings analysis from the last three games, including Nigeria. I'm sure there are more out there, though.

vs Portugal by CBS
quote:

RM Alejandro Bedoya, 5 -- Bedoya once again put in a full shift tracking back, doing his part in keeping Ronaldo quiet for the game's first 93:40, and that defensive work shouldn't be underrated -- it made it possible for Johnson to do what he did down the right flank. But he also just didn't make much offensive impact.

vs Ghana by CBS

quote:

RM Alejandro Bedoya, 5 -- Started brightly and defended with energy, but seemed to pick up a knock in the second half and saw his impact wane badly before being substituted.

vs Nigeria by ESPN

quote:

M Alejandro Bedoya, 5 -- Blew hot and cold with his passes, though he did well to spot Johnson prior to the goal. Provided some badly needed defensive cover when Johnson ventured forward, but on the ball needed to make better decisions.

He's put in some good efforts defensively, but he's not creating much offensively, nor posing much of a threat. He has been spent after an hour or so. I think having him on as a second half sub makes sense in the knockout round. But against Germany, defensive play is vital to advance, so I would probably stick with the same lineup as against Portugal.

No. He is our best option there. He tracks back well and will play tirelessly for as long as he can. I do not love the fact we are starting Bedoya, but who else?

So you'd think Brad Davis is a better option at RM?

It all depends on how drained he is from running his arse off the past two difficult matches.

Mix would do well in Bradley's spot, but we have to play Bradley. If Bradley is gassed and/or playing awful, then I would not be totally opposed to bringing on Mix as a late sub for Bradley.

There's a reason all of those ratings said he put in good defensive work. That's why jurgen puts him out there. Fabian overlaps and bedoya covers that area when Fabian can't get back.

There's a method to the madness.

Exactly. Bedoya allows Johnson to get into the offensive third. Fabian has been one of the best attacking fullbacks in the entire tournament.

I believe for a solid chunk of the Portugal match, Zusi and Bedoya flipped sides.

absolutely not. if we need something to happen offensively, we aren't talking off bradley. if we need something to happen defensively (we arent taking off bradley), and we arent bringing on mix. did i mention we arent taking off bradley?

Bradley and gassed are two words that don't belong in the same sentence. He's MB 90 not MB 75:43

Bedoya was asked to mark Asamoah v. Ghana and did pretty well. Against Portugal he tracked back and helped on Ronaldo. Again, he played pretty well.

I wouldn't mind seeing Mix or Green in there for some more offense.

He's done extremely well defensively, no one would argue that. I'd even like him fresh late in the match to preserve an outcome -- I stated that in the OP.

But if we want to get to the Round of 16, I felt the question needed to be asked and discussed.

This game may not be the norm after Manaus. I hope it was just a two game fluke, but Bradley's late game decisions and executions have been brutal. I think he is carrying an undisclosed injury.

Mix. Play him where Bradley is playing, and put Bradley back where he belongs - deeper with Jones.

It is impossible to upset the Jones/Beckerman partnership at this time.
