I'm right on the tipping point of becoming a soccer fan but I just have to figure out how to have a rooting interest. I'm not at the point where I could really just watch random matches. I need to have a vested interest somehow. Help me out here guys. Should I just pick one of the USA guys and start following what ever team he plays for? Randomly pick a team?

Just watch as much as you can. Try to find names you recognize and watch their teams play. Every Premier League game is available in the USA. Other leagues are available too, just a little more difficult to find.

Also, support the MLS.

The easiest thing to do is follow the US Men's National team in all of their games. World Cup qualifying takes fricking forever, so it can give you something to watch for 2 years. Also, next summer there is the Gold Cup. Since the winner of that Gold Cup will go to the 2017 Confederations Cup, Mexico and the US will send legit squads to the tournament. So that will give you something to watch next summer.

Also, Euro 2018 in France will have the same schedule as this World Cup essentially and have excellent games. I watch all of the Euro games as a neutral.

Watch some games. The human condition will eventually take over and you will find yourself pulling for someone. That gets about as genuine as it can get, imo.

If any player has cought your eye this tournament start following there club team. But also give all the teams in the league a chance, you might find a new player or be impressed by a certian clubs style of play. Remember the team you start watching doesnt have to be the one you follow forever.

EPL will be the easiest league to follow but its not the only one out there.

also play FIFA

During the '98 WC i really liked watching Michael Owen for England... He played for Liverpool, so when I decided to root for a team, thats one that I turned to... still took me a little while and flirted with other teams as my interest grew, but ended up sticking with them and have been frustrated as hell ever since...

Follow the USMNT religiously. Follow your favorite players from those games, and let the love in. I started following Landon Donovan's return to MLS after the last world cup, and I got to watch a beautiful thing in the emergence of several National teamers (Zusi,Besler,Wondo, ect.) and the rapid growth of the league as a whole. If you require watching the highest quality of football, then the EPL and UEFA Champions league are what I prefer. But I'm not some snob who won't watch SEC football because it's not as good as the NFL.

Pay no attention to the majority of ex-pat, post-alot geezers claiming so-called insider understanding of the game.

I could be wrong but I thought there was a playoff between the 2013 winner (which was us) and the 2015 winner to go to the Confed Cup?

Find where the US players play and just watch their games and root for them to succeed. One of their teams (or an opponent) will call out to you.

Won't really matter when we win it in 2015 as well.

Just keep watching the World Cup, ask questions about players or teams or even rules, and then come back after the World Cup is over based on your knowledge. Let's say you really like watching Luka Modric, then I would tell to watch Real Madrid if you want to watch him play more. You will get more detailed answers about leagues and teams after the World Cup.

Watch MLS too. The season is currently ongoing (though taking a short break for the WC), and there will be a lot of nationally televised games coming up.

Sporting KC plays Chicago fire July 5 on ESPN. A bit of a rivalry and Sporting KC is known to have great fan support and has been a consistently solid team the last few seasons, though both national team heroes Graham Zusi and Matt Besler will hopefully still be with the USA and unable to play for SKC.
