Also do I need a rental car? Will be staying on sunset blvd in Beverly Hills. Fricking parking at the hotel is $30/day. Taking the family for some sightseeing

You will need a car. Don't allocate too much time for Hollywood, it's disgusting.

Family friendly driving stuff:
Greystone
Griffin Park Observatory.
Long Beach aquarium and the big boat.
Driving around that whole area is quite picturesque. Drive to Malibu via Sunset and eat at one of them restaurants on the beach at dusk. Gladstone is a good one.

Nothing. There is absolutely nothing to do in LA

I went to UCLA for a trip, and I would recommend driving through campus, as well as Bel Air. It was really cool to look at all the houses. Driving through Beverly Hills was also cool.

Last time I was in Beverly Hills, we trenched lawns at 3:00 am after hitting the bars. Try that.
Otherwise, do the touristy things like go to Venice Beach, the Comedy Store, and go look at Marilyn Monroe's crypt.

Use Uber. Dont rent a car. Uber is great in LA.

I did the following two years ago and lost about 10 pounds while on vacation:
-Went to overpriced bars in Studio City
-Walked around Manhattan Beach and Santa Monica
-Drove all over Orange County/Newport Beach
-Walked the UCLA campus
-Walked the USC campus
-Drove to Malibu and walked the Pepperdine campus
The best things about LA are the weather, females and scenery. Just hang out close to the coast and avoid the sketchy areas downtown.

Stay in your hotel. You can't afford to leave.

Venice Beach boardwalk is interesting. Lots of fun people watching, plus there are iconic sights like Muscle Beach.
Santa Monica Promenade if you want to do some shopping. Also close to some beautiful views of the ocean. The actual beaches aren't great but if you like beaches, they are feasible options.
If you love roller coasters, go to Magic Mountain on a weekday to avoid lines. Great park. Tastu is an awesome ride. Probably a 45 minute drive in the San Gabriel Mountains. Disneyland is an option if you have little kids instead. It's about an hour the other way.
If you like art museums, the Getty is great. I would recommend the one on the west side rather than Malibu. LACMA is also good and will be a 10 minute drive.
Rodeo Drive can be done in a couple of hours and is close to your hotel as well.
After the kiddos are in bed, it's worth checking out the Sunset Strip. Lots of famous bars that you'll recognize from the hair metal days that are still surviving.
Hiking in Griffith Park and the observatory is also good if you like astronomy.
ETA: Peterson Automotive Museum is worth a visit as well. RIP Biggie.
You will definitely need a car though. Mass transit blows in LA. Awesome city otherwise.

Go to the Getty center one day. Awesome views and it'sfree.
If you and the wife get away hit nics martini bar and restaurant and vodka cellar. The food was really good there.
Also a hike up to the Hollywood sign is pretty cool
Lastly I would hit the Santa Monica pier and then walk from there on the beach to Venice and watch the freaks. Then take lunch at larrys.
