He was a career guy and had been in about 8 years when the wars started in the Middle East. Three tours in Afghanistan and two in Iraq.

He says no one over there wants us there. He says nobody in Washington comprehends that those people have drastically different values than do we. Life is worthless. Private property really does not exist. He said they don't want a democracy.

He says the whole region can kiss his arse.

I ask him why he kept re-enlisting and he said the retirement benefits and it is what his buddies did.

He said he did what he had to do to survive and that's all he said about that.

Let em kill each other for time eternal IMHO.

Old men sending young men to war. I hope it stops.

I understand this and already knew their sentiments about our intervention. And I'm sure that those in Washington know it as well, but war is big business.

I've talked to a couple of guys that say the same exact thing. The re-enlistment issues is for retirement benefits and those guys feel extreme loyalty to their unit. Their unit is their family and they'll fight to the end for each other. What a great group of men and women! What pieces of crap we have running this country and making decisions to put these folks in harms way. He's right, those people hate our guts, even the ones we are fighting for.

As a 26-year veteran, this clip sums it up - although Hollywood, this film is as close as it gets to how many of us feel:

Those who haven't served will never understand. It is totally beyond their comprehension. I learned that decades ago.

My childhood friend who's an SF medic told me in between his first AFG tour and his third Iraq tour, "We're killing them in droves, and when we leave, nothing will have changed."

If you make it past the 8-10 yr mark you mise well do the twenty years for the retirement.

Sad part back when I was in they had guys right at 19 yrs they were waiting to see if we would have a conflict in North Korea because of the uprising in China.
My unit made it to North Korea to train really to strengthen troops on the border.
A few weeks after things cooled off they let a few 18 and 19 yr soldiers go and my unit was suppose to be disbanded.
A few week later we were going to Kuwait and they called these guys back.
Some guys got lucky and hit their 20 yrs while in Kuwait.

I heard they treat the lifers ( what we called people close to twenty) a lot better today than back when I was in.

Same thing when I went. The locals could care less and only liked us because we bought dumb shite at the Haji Mart and provided some stimulation to their local economies. I always felt like they want to slit my throat at all times.

There are things I've struggled with for over 30 years. I've spent my fair share of time looking out the kitchen window for cars with govt license plates.

There are two things I know with a metaphysical certitude:
1) We have an non-exaustable supply of people who want to tell others what to do,
2) If we ever run out of young men who will take up arms to fight for this country, we're screwed.

This would actually be good. If young men would refuse to fight for their corrupt government, then maybe there would be fewer wars.

Why did he re enlist? Because he's sucking that government welfare tit dry. He probably couldn't hold a real job flipping burgers.

Why do people consider it an 'honor' to talk to people who serve in the military? It's mindless military worship.

This is missing a key element.

We're not there to spread democracy, in fact we've removed democratically elected regimes from the region in favor of dictatorships.

We're there for economic reasons, end of story.
