Anybody practice casting?

The Johhny Horton thread made me curious to ask if anyone practices casting. I used to with a 5 gallon bucket, would move it around the yard and cast at different distances. Anybody else practice or do you guys just throw and hope for the best?

I practiced with my spinning reel when I first got it because I had never used one before. Don't really feel the need to practice with a baitcaster.

What do you tie to the line when you're practicing?

When I was a kid and started throwing a baitcaster my old man put a metal bucket in the yard for me to practice with. I'd toss a 3/8 oz bell sinker in it and laugh every time it would bang the sides. He used to make me practice left handed to learn. Said he didn't want me to be limited to right hand only. I mastered it all by the time I was 7 or so.

My parents have a pool. I practice every chance I get to.
ETA: Take the hooks off of an old top-water and you have a way to keep the dogs entertained for a long time.

Hadn't thought about practicing retrieves in the pool.
As for casting, there is a weight and a section of braid hanging from the power line in front of my house from the last time I practiced throwing with a new rod and reel. After it wrapped around the wire I had to cut the string. Just look for the casting weight hanging over the street and you can find my house.

I just take the hooks off an old worn out lure and use it.

5 gallon bucket? I use red solo cups.
I used to a lot. Pitching and flipping accurately is very important for bass fishing.

I do. I also practice throwing my cast net in my pool.

If you can hit a red solo cup at 30 yards or so, color me impressed

I practice casting when I get a new reel or re-string one.

My dad made me practice using a bell sinker casting at a coffee can. I bought one of those rubber casting plugs when teaching my grandson to cast a spinning rod and reel. Now he's been fishing with me for 4 years and he's pretty good.

Just get out there and do it, change distance, start with a bigger target and get smaller

I went out to a BREC park to practice fly casting, once. Never again. Made a fool of myself. Snagging branches and all kinds of twigs and shite on the ground behind me.
