The Metro Council also introduced an agenda item that would pave the way for “ride sharing” companies to come to Baton Rouge.

Currently, to carry passengers in exchange for a fare in Baton Rouge, one must be a licensed cab driver approved by the taxi cab commission. But the amended ordinance, proposed by Heck and John Delgado, would relax those requirements.

Companies like Uber, SideCar and Lyft, which is known for the pink mustaches on its drivers’ cars, utilize smart phone apps to allow riders to hail a cab and pay the fares.

In some cases, it connects riders to drivers who are using their own vehicles.

“These are vehicles dispatched through the internet, as opposed to the traditional method of standing on the street corner and hailing a cab, or the tried and not true method in Baton Rouge of calling for a cab,” Delgado said.

That means it'll get voted on next meeting right?

ETA: I mean, now that it's been "introduced"? Don't know exactly how the metro council works.

Depends on how much hell the YellowCab raises. Which is going to be a lot.

Obviously the cab system in Baton Rouge is failed. It is to the point where a fricking local beer distributor gives free rides on New Years. Yeah that gives them some good press, and that is a reason they do it, but still. Even tow trucks do free tows and rides around here for New Years and stuff.

I am all for Uber.

It means it will be debated and allow for a public comment session at the next meeting, unless it is deferred or withdrawn from the agenda.

If an agenda item is not withdrawn or deferred then, yes, it gets voted on.

They don't provide a lot of time for public debate. It would seem to me that more time would be needed for the public to weigh in sometimes.

But it may be a good idea.

Besides the whole rape thing, Uber is pretty awesome.....cheaper rides and cleaner taxis. The Yellow Cabs here in Houston are driven by racecar wannabe Nigerians with shitty cabs.

They are essentially outlawed here b/c of permitting however they skirt that issue daily.

As soon as government figures out a way to tax these alternative operations they will be approved in a heartbeat.

It would be unlike the BR city council to make the correct decision. I will hold out hope they don't frick this up but I have zero confidence in them.

I agree it's crazy. We have a city full of people that drink regularly, a god awful cab service, and DUI checkpoints basically every night.

It's a formula for disaster except for the police department. It'd be nice to see this start up and catch on here.

Uber is the tits, I use it almost every time I cab into and out of district. Unfortunately, the Virginia DMV decided to send them a cease and desist order.

Terry McAuliffe wasn't getting his graft from them, as opposed to Yellow Cab.

Its a call based taxi that works through an app on your phone. You connect a credit card through the app so there's no need to pay in the car. The drivers are hired and fired based on customer ratings and they are waaay better than normal cab drivers. Not to mention the average wait time is like 5 minutes (up here anyway)

In many areas this is going to be akin to the transition from horse-and-buggy to automobile. The cab companies would be well-advised to change their business model to take advantage of this new app-driven market. Make your own app and re-classify your drivers as cars-for-hire.

Problem solved (except for any possible union issues, but considering how well unions have managed to cripple Detroit... frick them).

Similar exemptions to the one Delgado and Heck are proposing have generated numerous lawsuits in other cities and states, and Yellow Cab Manager Keith Wyckoff cautions that the same will happen in Baton Rouge should companies like Uber enter the market.

"They don't feel that they come under anyone's regulations," says Wyckoff, who previously expressed concerns to Daily Report after it first reported that Uber was considering expansion into Baton Rouge. "They provide transportation but insist that they're a technology company so the rules don't apply to them. They make the cities sue them to stop them. They're more or less like the mafia of transportation services."

So the Yellow Cab manager is accusing Uber of acting like a mafia?

Zombie Henry Hill, of Goodfellas infamy, laughs at that, then breaks all their cab windows, pours gasoline in, and throws a lit cigarette inside.
