Just a few minutes ago, I happened to be out on my 3rd floor patio (Northshore/St. Tammany) overlooking a 5 acre retention pond checking things out as I normally do with my **awesome** Canon Stabilizing binoculars when a pair of what I think were Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks flew by, circled back and landed out in the water about 50 yards from me. They sat for about for 10 seconds then bugged out. When I first saw them flying, I thought they might be Marsh Hens, but when they turned and flashed that big white stripe on the back of their wings, it got my attention. Very muted colors - almost a mauve type coloring on their head and breast. Definitely had the pink bill and feet.

Anybody have any scoop on these? Should I consider this a rare sighting? As you can probably guess, I've never laid eyes on one before. Thanks in advance...

They are fairly common around the lake. Bayou Castine is loaded with them.

The Venetian Isles and Bayou Sauvage area has plenty. They are also in City Park.

I saw some on the north shore the other day too. Does anyone know if they're good eating?

Very tasty and dumb as a box of rocks. Will actually re-decoy even after ripping into a flock. However, they usually all leave after the first decent cold front so by the opener, it's pretty scarce for tree duck action.
