What movie adaptations are better than the books?

In general I tend to like original books better than their movie/tv adaptations. Harry Potter for sure. Game of Thrones the tv show has been leveling the playing field for a while, but I probably still prefer the books.
I've never really been a purist, so I think I tend to give adaptations a better shot than most people, and so there are some series I actually prefer the screen version. LotR for one, though I never did finish the books.
Just watched Catching Fire, and I for sure prefer the Hunger Games movies to the books. I've though that since the first movie, which I also really enjoyed. The books were OK. I liked the story, but the writing was kinda bad I thought.

I thought Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption was a solid read so I would call the movie a flawless execution of a great story.

This will sound odd, but The Running Man.... The story was very short and didnt have all the different character interactions as the movie plus Killians character wasnt there much at all

was "Here's your Sub Zero, now Plain Zero!" in the book?
what about "I hope you leave enough room for my fist because I am going to ram it into your stomach and break your god damn spine!"?
If no to either of those than the movie is infinitely better than the book

I wouldn't say it's "better" than the book, but I have a fondness for the mini series The Stand that I don't really have for the book (though I really enjoyed the book). There were some great performances in that mini series.
Now, I will say that I think the Lonesome Dove mini series was better than the book. The book was great. But the mini series was one of my favorite shows/movies/series of all time.

Caddyshack II is leaps and bounds better than the book.

Hunger Games movies are better than the books. Suzanne Collins isn't a good writer at all (FWIW she was a screenwriter before she wrote the series). They translate a lot better to film and they've made good changes...Mockingjay the movie will still probably suck though.
