Router Purchase Question - Apple AirPort Extreme or NetgearN750 DualBand?

We're due for an upgrade to our router at home. We have a two story house and the Wifi doesn't reach up to the second floor game room.
Between the wife and I, we have two iPhones, an iPad and an OSx mini desktop. Also, we have a wireless printer.
Is it worth it to get the $200 AirPort or just go with the $100 Netgear N750 Dual Band?
TIA, I'm just having trouble identifying the real advantages of the AirPort over the regular router.

From my limited experience with an Airport extreme I'd say it is simplicity of use which has it's pros and cons.

Also some sort of directional signal antenna that strengthens in the direction of the wireless receiver it's connecting to.
But once set up I can't say in regular use I notice a difference.

It's called beaconing or beam forming and it's available on most high-end routers like the Asus RT-N66U. I just got one of these a few months ago and am very, very satisfied with performance. Setup was almost plug-n-play.

I would go with ASUS - find the product in their line that does what you want it to do - I ended up having to go to WM in the middle of the night and got another Linksys - had I been able to plan the migration, I would have gone ASUS.
I've recommended them for a while now and I've heard nothing but good things about them.
(ETA: It's rare when I agree with Layabout, but when I do, it is usually emphatic agreement. )

categories
- best value for 'normal' people (like that $20 cisco someone posted)
- best n router
- best AC router
- best for large houses
- best for torrenting...
etc.

Can't remember what we had before but we opted for the cheaper version and it was garbage. Upon the last replacement we upgraded to the Apple Airport Extreme and it was well worth it. Definitely would recommend.

You should get the new Asus RT-AC3200, anything else and you're just wasting your money.
Waste of money unless you upgrade all of your devices to match. By the time you do that, you might as well wire the house with Cat6 and be done with it.

I got one of these as well. Get either one of these or the newer AC version RT-AC66U.

About 2 years ago I bought a Linksys pos at BB for about $79. Took it home and tried to intall it. After 3 hours of phone calls between Cox and Linksys, the guy at Linksys told me he couldnt help me and to take it back to the store. I went back to BB and told the guy that I was tired of junk and wanted the best wifi they had. He took me to the Apple section and handed me an Airport. It was $150 at the time. Took it home and had it up and running within 15 minutes. One of the best electronic purchases I've ever made! Range is great! (I can connect to my wifi at my neighbors next door.) I would highly recommend the Airport. As with most things, you get what you pay for.
