Can someone give me the run down on this Bergdahl guy?

I've been out of pocket for a while. I know he was released from Taliban captivity due to a prisoner trade. But whats all this about him being a desserter? His dad's tweets? Bergdahl's anti-American manifesto?
Thanks.
Thanks.

He was a desserter that's all.

Ok. Can anyone else offer more than one sentence on the subject?

Deserter, got caught, returned home in exchange for five top level terrorists and is being made out to be a hero. He appears to be unanimously hated by his fellow soldiers, sounds like he may have been unstable and seems like a general doucher.

I'm wondering the same. I read some articles that said soldiers who served with him called him a deserter, but is that just the product of the rumor mill that got churning after many soldiers died during the search to find Bergdahl? People would understandably be upset and looking for someone to blame.
I don't think Bergdahl was blameless, and maybe he is a deserter. He definitely pulled some stupid shite that got him caught. How do you just 'vanish' from a post by accident?
But aside from a few accusations, I don't see any detailed accounts of what went down. That's what I'd like to see.

Read social media. As one might expect, there is some conflicting reporting. But it seems clear he left on his own. Some reports indicate that the boy (being a bit touched) thought he'd be free to wander around as long as he didn't bother the locals. Taliban snatched his arse up, gave him the prison treatment, and turned him over HQN operatives.
Others argue that he left to join up with the Taliban and either (1) found out the hard way that they didn't want to be friends or (2) was accepted into the fold, but pretended to be in duress while secretly working with them--perhaps to secure the release of five previous HVIs.

Right. But does anyone have any info on his dad's comments that caused some controversy? I also heard something about some anti-American rants by Bergdahl, not sure though.

I think it's also important to keep in mind the distinction between 'deserter' and 'defector'. One is just going AWOL, the other is going AWOL with the intention of joining the enemy.
I can buy that he was a 'deserter' but I doubt that he was a defector. Obviously, both are really bad.

His dad was tweeting AlQ ops saying he'd work to get all Guantanamo prisoners released. Also said some rote Islamic statement at the end of one of his Pressers with Obama.

Obama traded 5 terrorist for 1 deserter without consulting Congress.

Yes, and the rock doesn't have wifi

One is just going AWOL,
Desertion is a more serious offense than just being AWOL.
AWOL is usually a circumstance of not being where you're supposed to be. Desertion implies an intent to not return at all.
When I was in AIT, we had a girl in our company go AWOL one night. She was an Italian girl from Brooklyn, didn't speak English very well, not sure how she got thru Basic. Really had no business being in the service to begin with.
They found her at her home in Brooklyn 28 days after she went AWOL, charged her, brought her back to the post for proceedings, and dishonorably discharged her. Had she been gone 2 more days, the charge would've upgraded from AWOL to desertion, and she would've faced prison time

He was a Pfc in the 1-501 Airbone Infantry unit. His platoon was in an op in Paktika, and right after he left gaurd duty he left his ssi and weapon on his bunk and left with only water and a knife. The guys in his unit knew he a little crazy, and have no doubts that he left freely. After that they went out to look for him and fighting intensified, and there are more alligations that the reason why he wasn't killed by the taliban is because he taught them about our battle drills, weapons, and vehicle capabilities. 6 Soldiers died in direct result of going out on missions to find him. And what make me even more pissed off is he made rank to Sgt now (although he clearly didn't do SSD1). That is just what everyone in the Army "knows". His dad has come out with some anti-American tweets, and he himself supposedly had mail to send to his mom saying that he was ashamed to be an American.

So who vetted the whole exchange situation for the administration? Did BO do this unilaterally?

What do you mean "vetted?"

Someone had to analyze the situation, right?
Someone intelligence official had to say "Trading 5 of these guys for one of ours that disappeared under mysterious circumstances is a fair deal." Or did BO say he was going to make the trade no matter what anyone says?
