Has anyone built a 300 blk pistol or sbr?

Looking to run a 8 or 8.5 in barrel.
Just wondering if anyone here has one, and any comments on the idea.

Yes I know all of the legal clarifications for sbr

I'm building one now. I'm going with the Red X Firearms 9 inch .300 Blackout Upper and will put a suppressor on it. It'll be my hog gun.

If you want to avoid doing all the paperwork for an SBR, get a Sig Sauer brace for your rifle. Here's what it would look like... The ATF has deemed it legal to shoulder it.

BARREL - 9" 4150 CMV STEEL HBAR/HEAVY CONTOUR BARREL. HARDENED TO 26-32 RC AND STRESS RELEIVED. CHAMBERED IN 300 BLACKOUT. 1-7 RH TWIST. BUTTON RIFLED. .750 UNDER GAS BLOCK. PLATED BLACK. RED X ARMS PHANTOM FLASH HIDER AND CRUSH WASHER. M4 FEEDRAMPS.

A3 FLAT TOP UPPER RECIEVER - MADE FROM CERTIFIED 7075-T6 ALUMINUM FORGINGS. BLACK HARDCOAT ANODIZED TO GOV. SPECS. PROPER "T-MARKS" ON RAILS. FORWARD ASSIST AND DUST COVER INSTALLED. M4 FEEDRAMPS.

This is the info from Red X's website. It's actually a 9 inch barrel and uses a pistol length gas system. I'm with you on those braces...so I'm going the expensive route with having to apply for 2 tax stamps. It sucks but it'll be a nice weapon for hunting hogs at night.

For what it's worth, I already own a Red X Firearms .300 Blackout (16" Barrel) and it's been a phenomenal weapon. I've killed a bunch of hogs with it.

Anything under 10.5" in 5.56/223 usually are rather unreliable (I am not saying no one has made them work but the majority are unreliable), and the terminal ballistics of a 7" barrel are pretty paltry anyway.

300blk does best suppressed and in shorter lengths, the gains of velocity from 8" to 16" are rather negligible so if you are looking to go short in the 300 it would not hinder it.

Here is a direct quote from one of the developers of the round at Remington from a FAQ on 300BlkTalk that can maybe clear up some of your concerns

quote:

Q: What about short barrels?
A: 300 AAC BLACKOUT, due to the larger bore than 223, is very efficient in shorter barrels, and we have had good functioning results with AR barrels down to 6.2 inches.

Q: What is the longest practical barrel?
A: The velocity does go up and up, even with barrels over 24 inches. However, few people will want a barrel over 20 inches because the tradeoff between velocity and length has diminishing returns.

Q: Is an adjustable gas block required to shoot subsonic unsuppressed, subsonic suppressed, full power unsuppressed, and full power suppressed?
A: It depends on the brand. An AAC will shoot all four configurations wihout any adjustment needed when using Remington or similar ammunition. No doubt several top makers will have products which will do this, but not all will.

Q: Should I look for an AR upper with carbine or pistol gas?
A: First, there is no barrel length which works with mid-length or rifle gas. The choices are carbine or pistol. For barrels under 16 inches, pistol is needed - the bore is larger than 5.56mm so the gas pressure drops off faster. For barrels 16 inches or longer, carbine or pistol gas will work.

Q: Well then - for a 16 inch barrel, why would someone chose one type of gas vs the other?
A: If you are the type of person who prefers mid-length gas on a 5.56mm because it has less gas port erosion and less stress on the bolt and extractor, then choose carbine gas. If you want to experiment with extra fast-burning powders and are willing to either not shoot full power ammo or have an adjustable gas block - then use pistol. Remington subsonic ammo generates enough gas pressure to be compatible with carbine gas in a 16 inch barrel.

I also have a Noveske 8.2" barrel that I have been meaning to put together, so as of right now I do not have any thing to report on it. I have been interested in the KAK industries Mr.Blond barrel LINK

If you don't want the hassle of building your own upper, check out MASdefense.com

They have really good selection, and the build quality is excellent. You can have one built for about the same price as parts would cost you.

The 7.5 barrel will cause some issues, not the barrel the gas port location. Try different weight buffers first to solve the problem, that usually fixes the problem. Best bet for a 5.56 sbr is a 10.5 barrel as velocity loss isn't too bad. When chrony'ed losing an average of 300-400fps when compared to 16" barrels. Still can ring steel out to 300 with ease. 300blk' while it has it's place, won't give that range. Well, bullet drop and velocity becomes the problem at range.

The sig brace is great. Use the KAK tube, it is specific for the brace and has a spacer to give length of pull similar to a 6 position stock on the 1st position.

Do it. Build the pistol and submit for you SBR. I'm building an 8.2 Noveske 300blk. It will be run suppressed.

Also, I have a Phase 5 pistol buffer/tube/spring if your interested going that route while you wait for your stamp to come back.

bkerr042812@gmail.com if you're interested in the pistol buffer tube assembly.

Are you going FDE on the cerakote, or you gonna try and contrast it a bit?

My big hold up is waiting on magpul with there mlok stuff so I can compare it against keymod rails. Also I think I am ordering vltor a5 system for my BCM 16" to smooth things out and increase reliability.
