I see these to be more about the person(s) than the sport...
Rocky
Brian's Song
Raging Bull
Field of Dreams
Hoosiers

I see these about even...
Tin Cup
Major League
Bull Durham
The Replacements
North Dallas Forty

Your thoughts on these or others?
Any that were more sport than person(s)?

Very rarely are good sports movies actually about the sport.

Just re-title the thread "Great Sports Movies" and you'll probably get the same results.

I agree.

What, however, were some of the good sports movies that were as much or more about the sport?

Remember the titans

It was more about race in that time than football, but still a good movie

Also in the most underrated thread, but Heaven Can Wait is a movie about the afterlife & reincarnation...of a pro QB.

What? Really?

Remember the Titans - 75% of the film is football. Football is the reason those kids segregated themselves. The schools were forced to but the kids came together as one unit, a team.

Cinderella Man - Depression, losing everything, down to the end of his rope...boxing brought him back. The sport gave him and his family a chance

We Are Marshall - Yep

Slap Shot - Funniest hockey movie of all time, easily. Classicly awesome. Perfect use of the sport.

Glory Road - See Remember the Titans Above

Bull Durham - It is about baseball, don't you dare take that away from me

Tin Cup - 90% of this movie is all golf

Moneyball - Changed the game of baseball

I am not saying you are wrong, I just think saying rarely is a bad move

Ok, so if we get technical, none of them are, ever.

You would have to have a documentary about a sport to qualify I guess. But the sport is def a huge part

This is the flaw with the idea of this thread. I can't even think of a movie that is actually at the heart of it completely about the sport. Then I start to ask myself if the reason why people really like sports is about the sports. It's about overcoming adversity, regional patriotism, etc. It's kind of a fuzzy path that you start heading down if you think about it that way.

ETA: The closest that comes to being completely about the sport that I can think of is Moneyball.
