They put the beta in beta. Ok, now that we got that joke out of the way, damn these things are hideous.

It was inspiring to start with a blank sheet of paper and ask, “What should be different about this kind of vehicle?” We started with the most important thing: safety. They have sensors that remove blind spots, and they can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections. And we’ve capped the speed of these first vehicles at 25 mph. On the inside, we’ve designed for learning, not luxury, so we’re light on creature comforts, but we’ll have two seats (with seatbelts), a space for passengers’ belongings, buttons to start and stop, and a screen that shows the route—and that’s about it.

seriously, where am i supposed to put my wet bar in this thing? What about taking mrs. colorchangin down to the lake canoodling in the back seat?

This is where they will make their money, marketing the sensors, software and control systems to vehicle manufacturers for retro-fitting them to older cars so people can have their luxury as well.

Same. I've always wanted self-driving cars. Probably due to how time I spent on trains and plains.

The only thing that'll be grinning wider than that car appears to be is the first person to sue Google after it runs into them.

Doesn't it have a pretty flawless driving record

Say goodbye to bad arse muscle cars. I can see this being like a public service thing like buses.

You know what? When(IF) Google manages to make one of these contraptions successfully drive itself--ALL BY ITSELF--from Newark to Queens during a snow storm at night, THEN I'll be impressed.

There was a great thread on this last week or two. I think this has potential to be the greatest invention in the past decade. The benefits are outrageously cool and the productivity and lifestyle enhancements are very real.

Question I had today while navigating through a confusing construction zone: WTF is a google car going to do when confronted with an "out of the box" scenario like that? I'm far from a luddite, and I'm all for this, but I think it's going to be a long time before these things can be turned loose in anything other than a very rigid road infrastructure.

use radar and data collection to react to it. Google already knows where the construction sites are for the most part. The amount of data it is taking in is insane

700,000 accident free miles as of April 29th in the Lexus self-driving google car. It reacts well to cyclists and railroad crossings. I want to say early on, they had 2 accidents when the driver took control of the vehicle

I think google will adapt very quickly. It would be even better if business and the public would adapt to it and report them

While it is ugly, I'd say it's better looking than what we thought the future would look like. The Johnny Cab from Total Recall:

They are.

Google self driving cars have never received a traffic ticket, so I would think navigating construction zones would be no problem.

They are "training" them on lots and lots of situations, including construction zones. They can read and understand a lot of signs. They have been managing everyday situations for a while now.

Besides, even if the car doesn't know exactly what it's looking at, it at least knows that it's looking at something, and it knows which direction and how fast it's moving, and how big it is. I can't imagine one of these cars actually running into something.

The car would probably make the correct decision to not drive at all, but I think they can probably make that trip already. Just very slowly.

And how can you not already be impressed by what they can do? Is it not impressive that they already drive better than 99% of the people on the road?

I wonder how they do in bad weather. Can you really say "it's raining, change break time/distance by X%" Obviously you can, but I'm saying how do they know how much X% should be? Can they tell how hard it is raining or how much water is on the road and change X% accordingly? I will say that the automatic antiskid steering assist technology in my current car works very well, and that's a fairly "dumb" technology compared to what we're talking, so I'm sure they'll figure it out.

What happens when some Russian hacks the network and starts driving cars off cliffs or into each other?

I don't think they run as networked vehicles. I'm pretty sure it's onboard sensors that control the movements of the car.
