I wonder how they do in bad weather. Can you really say "it's raining, change break time/distance by X%" Obviously you can, but I'm saying how do they know how much X% should be? Can they tell how hard it is raining or how much water is on the road and change X% accordingly? I will say that the automatic antiskid steering assist technology in my current car works very well, and that's a fairly "dumb" technology compared to what we're talking, so I'm sure they'll figure it out.

As of now, the car won't drive itself if it can't see markers on the road. But yeah, it is wired into every possible sensor in the car, so it knows what the traction control is feeling, etc. It considers every factor that you or I can think of, I'm sure.

Pretty sure they aren't online while driving, and if they are online I'm pretty sure they don't accept commands while driving.

Yeah, that's going to work. Who drives 25 mph and manages to get anywhere? Would be good for going to the convenience store 4 blocks away for a 6-pack but that's about it.

What happens when it has a blowout or breakdown? Does it repair itself?

I'll wait till they make one of these:

I imagine they will change the DUI laws. If you are "behind the wheel", the sole occupant, etc then you can still get charged with a dui.

This is actually a pretty significant political hurdle. Law Enforcement and Insurance Companies stand to lose a ton of revenue. Would the police really be able to attach themselves to a gas/mileage tax? Between this and the trend in marijuana legalization, cops might have to start cracking down on jaywalking to keep the lights on.

That's why I'm not that concerned about self-driving cars becoming extremely prevalent for 20 years. The lobbies will fight this to the bitter end.

I hadn't really thought on it more than DUI's, but now that you mention it... yeah. LE agencies will lose a shite-ton from minor traffic violations (speeding, running a stop sign, etc). Not only would those issues cease to exist (once the tech became the norm) but they would no longer have an ancillary reason to pull anyone over when their real goal is to check for drugs (see: DWB).

As much as I love the idea of electric/driverless cars, I cannot wrap my head around the fact that all but a couple of these types of cars (The ones made by Tesla) are fricking terrible to look at. Why can't we have these companies just stick to their normal brand styling that already works for every other car in their lineup?

The Nissan Leaf may be the ugliest car since the Aztek

Or they could reduce their spending to correlate with the reduction in crime.

WTfrick? In what world is reducing or eliminating traffic accidents and fatalities, while also improving both time and fuel efficiency a "horrible" idea?

He was referring to the concept of self-driving cars, not this specific model.

So eventually they'll get up to speed (over 25 mph). But they'll certainly have a governor that won't let you go over the speed limit.

What if you have an emergency, have to speed to get to the hospital for your wife about to give birth? Can you override the computer?

Yes this aspect of the self driving car is great and all but now it will be easier than ever for the government to track/trace your every move.

Not sure, but with sufficient adoption traffic levels would be drastically reduced.

Think if every car automatically picked the fastest/most efficient route based on real time data. So even though you may not exceed the speed limits, you will still likely get to your destination faster than you do now.
