I'm trying to plan some day trips with my son (12) for the summer. Looking for suggestions - short drive from BTR. Here is what I have so far:

1. Tunica Hills for hiking.
2. Old River Control Structure - not an easily accessible part of LA. Have always wanted to see it.
3. Avery Island

What else ya got?

What exactly are you wanting to see at the old river control structure? It's just concrete locks that you drive over.

Drive up to the ORCS
Grand Isle
Drive along the Gulf Beach Highway south of Lake Charles
Drive down to New Orleans and take highway 90 through the Rigolets and down the beach in Mississippi

I'm not trying to burst your bubble, I just don't want you to feel let down when you get there

I thought you meant Los Angeles. Upon realizing you meant Louisiana I laughed.

ORCS -- might not actually be much to see. I have just always been intrigued about the importance of the structure and a lot of people don't know anything about it.

It was built and maintained by the Army COE and keeps the Mississippi from flipping over into the Atchafalya River and basin - which would leave BTR and NOLA high and dry.

It's an incredible structure. Plus you get to drive over Morganza on the way up there. The forebay should be full this time of year.

No problem. I've never been in that part of LA and will probably drive up to Ferriday also. Again, probably not much to see - more the history angle.

Highway 15 is a neat drive. It's up on the levee most of the way south of Ferriday.

You're thinking of the three rivers locks. Old river locks just prevents the levees from busting due to hight water

The entire system comprised of three structures make up the ORCS. The low sill is the most important one most people think about.

That's it - I've just always heard it referred to as the ORCS.

Very long but interesting read on it that I read about a few years back when the MS river got so high - one of the first times (that I know about) that they had to open the valves on it.

Clarification - the article is from like 1987 but it got some bumps around the time of the flood and I read it then.

I just went to the WWII museum in N.O. It was an amazing place. You can definitely plan a full day around that.
