Reaction to Star Wars Special Editions in 1997

Outside of the Greedo scene, what was the general opinion of the additions? I'm not talking about hindsight when years of technological advancements make the SFX not age well (Mos Eisley, Jabba additions). I'm talking what your opinion was as you left the theater. Did it give you hope that the prequels would be great or was it a sad taste of things to come?
The 97 release was my introduction to Star Wars and it was all I had known until I bought the vhs tapes. While I get the less is more approach regarding the Wampa, I really liked the updated look. The end celebration was also a more epic finale that the trilogy deserved. I don't mind adding deleted scenes or creating new scenes entirely like the ending but I always felt added CGI like in Mos Eisley stuck out like a sore thumb even then.

I don't really remember. I was just about to turn 10 years old when they were released. I know they were a hit at the box office - at least A New Hope was. It made almost $140 million at the domestic box office upon its release. I went to see that one in theaters but didn't go see the other two.
Luckily for me I had been introduced to Star Wars two years earlier and knew what the originals looked like.

I had grown up with Star Wars, so I was already pretty into them when they released them the second time. I was 9 in 1997, so I wasn't exactly critiquing anything just yet at that age. I think that I was just excited to see them in theaters.

I was just thrilled to see it on the big screen. I didn't mind the alterations but I wasn't a huge Star Wars fan either. Really hated all the prequels though.

I had watched the originals numerous times when they released these. I was 11 when these were released and did not really have an opinion. As it stands now I really want the original released films to be brought back out and not the special editions.

It made me pretty excited. It was cool because I was too young to see empire and Jedi in the theatres, and seeng it on the big screen in thx was incredible. I liked all of the updates.

Lucas changed one of the best scenes in Empire when Luke escapes Cloud City. Vader used to say very emphatically, "Bring My Shuttle!". He changed it to the very weak, "alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival." Awful.

I remember seeing the horrible CGI Jabba and feeling sad. It was prophetic.

At the time, I thought the effects were pretty cool. But I never did quite get over the Greedo scene.

I was in on Star Wars from the beginning and I was excited just to finally get something new. I am not one to dig into the minute details, as long as it wasn't a huge glaring screw up I didn't mind. The next there movies were enjoyable but nothing compared to the first three.

The reanimation of Bespin's background was great.
The addition of all the distracting bullshite in Mos Eisley was terrible.
CGI Jabba was terrible.
Singing bitch in Jabba's palace was terrible.
Basically anything on Tattooine was god awful and everything else was alright.

Some of it is downright brutal now though. It's amazing how much worse those early CGI graphics have held up compared to the original models and stuff.
The Sarlac never gets enough love as a strong contender for worst looking addition in the special editions IMO. It looks terrible, and the original pit was miles and miles better.
Jabba addition was terrible because all of the dialogue had been moved into the Greedo scene since they couldn't use Jabba, so it is not only visually unappealing, but it jacks up the flow of the movie by adding what basically amounts to the same exact conversation that's already taken place.

In hindsight, it's clear he was doing it as practice for the FX clusterfrick that would be the prequels, but I didn't see that at the time.

CGI is what has hurt SW the most for me. Part of the magic of the first ones was the puppetry and costumes. Could you imagine a CGI Mos Eisley scene?

I didn't mind the Jabba and Solo scene added because I always wondered who is this Jabba character that Solo talks about in A New Hope. With that said the CGI Jabba sucked balls. I know this was a deleted scene when A New Hope was filmed and Jabba was just another dude. Since Jabba was never introduced until ROTJ, Lucas made Jabba a huge fat, puppet lizard.
