Just how "public" are public schools?

Brought the kiddos up to the local high school (small suburban community) to kick the soccer ball around with them on the football field. There is a fence around the field but all the gates were wide open. Some other kids were even playing frisbee there. Cop shows up and tells us we need to get off the field that we are trespassing. I jokingly told him my school taxes ensure that field stays green so that the high school kids can play on it in the fall. He threatens to arrest me so I of course leave since my kids were there.

So...can kids play on the playground at the elementary all weekend long with no trouble but we get harassed for being on a football field during the off-season? And yes, I played football for 3 years at a 5A high school so I know the "significance" of a field....DURING football season. Was this cop on a powertrip or was I legitimately trespassing? No signs are posted anywhere that remotely mention the field is private or off-limits.

Honest question here.

It's trespassing.

Public school facilities aren't public parks.

The school grounds belong to the school board. They are paid for by public dollars, not open to the public. You can't go strolling around other government buildings whenever you want just because your taxes pay for them

Yep. Your trespassing. If you or you kids call and break your leg, you can sue the school board. It's publicly funded so your kid can attend and play there during supervised hours, not use at your own leisure.

An unused ball field at a local suburban HS is not the White House lawn...some discretion should be used.

HS by my house growing up has two softball fields, football practice field, track and tennis courts. All are used by the public without issue.

The track at the local HS stadium is open as a courtesy to walkers and joggers. There are signs up asking people to stay off the inner lanes to save wear and tear on the surface, and no bikes or skateboards allowed. The former is nearly always ignored, and the latter is often ignored. So my tax dollars will go to resurfacing the track more often than it should have to be done.

Plus, if somebody trips over their shoelace and gets hurt, I'm sure they'll take personal responsibility and not sue the school board, amirite?

Free public education. Not a playground for the public.
I'm a high school coach and deal with this all the time. You may be part of the 10% of people that will use the facility and leave it the way you found it but sadly that isn't a common practice of the public useing those facilities.

The neighborhood kids all play on the playground equipment at their elementary school on the weekends without any dickhead cop coming around.

Guess I thought school grounds were open for local residents.

sounds like he may have come on a little strong, but we don't really have both sides of the story...

I can certainly see why they would not want the general public playing recreational sports on the field while the school is not in use, though...probably should lock the gate, if that is the case...

Question sounds like something a public school grad would ask.

I feel sorry for poor people that have to send their kids to some of the jungle, out of control public schools that exist.

If you really want to feel a big "frick you" to your taxes, try to go visit your alma matter during lunch and see if the school allows you to visit your old teachers.

Because they don't want random adults roaming the halls. Pretty understandable.

It isn't a common practice for any facility. The public in general will just ruin what is yours because it isn't theirs. You're saving tax money in the long run by not letting everyone in. Plus liability, liability, liability. Until we stop letting people sue over bull shite you will have dumb arse rules.
