But I thought Europe was so progressive:

quote:

The country's election authority said a preliminary tally showed 76% voted against the proposal and 24% voted for it.

Labor unions had campaigned for months to win public backing for a minimum hourly wage of 22 Swiss francs, or nearly $25. Adjusted for the cost of living, it would be worth about $17.60 in the United States.

The Swiss government and business leaders had warned that the initiative would destroy jobs, hurt lower skilled employees and make it harder for young people and others to enter the workforce.

Switzerland is a wealthy country, enjoying above average rates of growth and employment and relatively short working hours.

But unlike many advanced economies, it does not have a statutory national minimum wage. Pay is set in negotiations between companies and individuals, or with employee representatives -- sometimes across industrial sectors.

Swiss unions argued that it was a disgrace that 330,000 mainly young workers in one of the world's richest countries don't earn enough to support a decent quality of life. Many work in retail, hotels or restaurants.

quote:

Germany is planning to introduce a national minimum wage next year for the first time, at 8.50 euros an hour. That's worth about $15 in the U.S.

Their voters are probably smart enough to understand that wages should be a function of data/supply and demand. In other words, what you get paid is based on the value of your skills in the marketplace.

They have a smart voter base apparently. Unlike the idiots that go to the polls here.

Switzerland, as far as I know, does not have a political party that "herds" poor people to the polls like the democrat party does here. People there understand economics.

They have no minimum wage and they rejected what would have been the world's highest minimum wage. That hardly makes them conservative.

Something will be done soon, even if it's a lower minimum wage. This is their third referendum on pay in 18 months and they're worried about the growing income inequality.

Minimum wage is just another variable in your supply/demand equation, not a seperate entity altogether.

76% to 24% says otherwise. You want to make more make yourself a more desirable employee.

So, the Swiss are informed voters. That's refreshing.

Again, the vote was to go from no minimum wage to the highest one in the world. Just because the vote didn't pass doesn't mean they're not worried about income inequality. It likely means they think there's a more reasonable amount to agree upon.

How much was the proposed minimum wage? And by what metric is it the "highest in the world?"

Do you honesty believe that in such a homogenous advanced economy, that some people are only making what equates to four dollars an hour ?

Their labor union leaders were really dumb in trying to go from 0 to $25. If they went for something in the $10-12 range, I am sure they would have gotten it.

Regardless of political ideology, I think that's something that can be agreed upon.

So you mean to tell me a free market and competitive work environment leads to more wealth and more employment, spurring economic growth?

There is a shining beacon to look at over here, America. Take notes

Yea they swung for the fences and whiffed. Regardless, they'll likely vote again on a more reasonable number.

Swiss gun laws are also very anti-European.
