Decided to watch this film late last night. Thought it was pretty good. But, it definitely ran twenty minutes too long & Maria Bello's character annoyed me.

Anyways, I'm still trying to decided if i feel bad for Paul Dano's character. It's obvious that he had the mind of a ten year old child and didn't have the ability to communicate with people his own age. One reason I find myself not feeling sorry for him was the way he treated the family dog while taking it outside to pee.

Dude was a sociopath no matter what his mental capacity. No sympathy here.

He obviously knew what was going on and could have said something. No sympathy.

Melissa Leo's character made the statement, "Alex wanted to take the girls for a ride. I was the one who decided to capture them.".

One crazy b*tch.

Also, when did y'all start to piece some of the information together? When JG's character visited the old lady whose son disappeared years ago, that's when I thought Alex or Barry could have been abducted.

I think Melissa Leo is the best actress on the planet now.

frick Alex. He took the kids, he strangled that dog, he knew who had the kids and could've said something. We know this because he said things regarding the kids several times.

frick him, I cheered when HJ beat the shite out of him.

I figured it out pretty damn early on, only gripe I had with the movie was how easy it was for me to figure out.

Also, if HJ had not captured/tortured Alex the girls would never have been found. They'd be dead. HJ 100% did the right thing.

JG was a shite detective.

I liked this movie. Once he strangled the dog I didn't feel bad for him at all.

The real morons in this whole thing were the two little girls.

Seriously? They jumped into an old arse gross RV with an obvious weirdo to go for a ride? They were clearly old enough to know that was stupid and that Alex was a complete weirdo.

Again,

I thought this movie was really good about what a family will do to find their loved ones...

Until the sinister plot unfolds as to why they were taken. That was dumb, it removed the questions of morality by the fathers, and made it seem like it didn't matter.

No sympathy here. Knew what was going on and everytime he spoke to HJ it was in some damn riddle.

The short answer is: No.

He knew where the girls were and wouldn't open his mouth. He got what he deserved.

From what I gather, he was trying to reenact his abduction. Apparently that family gave him the special kool aid and he couldn't remember anything from his childhood. Personally, I think he was more off his rocker than Alex was.

That scene drove me crazy and then he started to sing the song the two young girls were singing.

Well, this thread certainly did not go how I expected it to when I clicked on the title.

How could anyone not feel sympathy for the Alex character in this film?

Just like the two main characters in the movie, he was abducted as a young kid. The abductors poisoned him to the point of mental impairment. He was 'raised' by two sociopaths who did god knows what to him for 20 years. Where do you think he learned that strangling a dog for a few seconds if acceptable behavior? Instead of having a normal life with the mom that loved him so much she still watches the one videotape she has of him, he spent 20 years living in a constant state of fear and was mentally incapacitated by his two abductors.

The only reason people do not feel sympathy for that character is because the movie is not told from his perspective. He went through the same thing those girls did, only it lasted a lot longer. Hugh Jackman is probably the first person he has spent any considerable amount of time with since being abducted and the vast majority of that time is spent getting tortured and beaten.

So yes, I feel sympathy for him. Probably hasn't been a good life. Feel sympathy for the Hugh Jackman character as well. Doesn't have to be mutually exclusive.
