Does the OT endorse the use of travel agents?

I'm planning a Europe trip and I'm seriously thinking about using a travel agent to plan the flights, hotels, trains and cars. Is this something people still do or am I living in the past?

I did it for my honeymoon to Costa Rica and my trip to playa last year.

It's free and they can help you a lot if you have never been someplace before. Why wouldn't you use it?

Mine got me a better price on a resort than any price I was able to find online myself.

Just not necessary anymore.

I couldn't imagine. Researching is half the fun. Learning about the best places. I think it is usually more expensive to go thru an agent.

Depending on the trip they can definitely be worth it. I'd use one in your situation.

Its 2014. Seems pointless.

My problem is I don't have the time right now to research. The hotels look deceptively similar online and it will take me time to coordinate the rail tickets and rental cars. I'm probably ok paying a bit more.

Another huge plus to going through an agent....

You can just put a deposit down on your trip and have it booked. Then pay off the balance usually 30 days before the trip.

Same.

My agent in Costa Rica had my entire trip planned. We literally landed at the airport and everything was already taken care of(excursions, transportation, hotels, etc). Just made the trip more enjoyable knowing it was already taken care of.

AAA does a pretty good job actually for free. Also one of my buddies dad is apparently some bad arse travel agent out of Dallas. They are loaded and him and his wife just travel the world now on business.

Yes!

You find all the stuff you want to do and they do the dirty work and make it happen. Sure, It's more expensive. . But we'll worth it for an extended trip.

I used one for a 33 day trip to Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. It was flawless planning.

It's 2014 not 1994.

The only reason I'd ever use one would be for some South American countries, maybe Asia. Just areas where there's a language barrier in some places and not much of an online correspondence presence. And I'd only use it for flights/buses.

Would never use one for Europe.

Our last two trips to Disney World, we used a travel agent. Ended up saving us money and took the "stress" out of planning it all.

For our summer vacation getaways or quick weekend trips, we book everything on our own.

I'm using one for a Hawaii trip. She is a friend and saved me a couple Hundy.

Then you probably want to go with a tour group.

There are several reputable Tour companies:

Globus family (Globus, Cosmos, Monogram)

Trafalgar

Rick Steves

Steve Perillo

Tauck

I've taken two Globus tours and both were far better than I imagined. All I had to do was write a check. And pack.
