Mark Zuckerberg Gave New Jersey $100 Million To Fix Newark's Schools, And It Looks Like It Was A Waste

In the fall of 2010, Mark Zuckerberg announced on Oprah that he'd be making a generous gift to Newark, New Jersey. As Oprah said in her Oprah way, "one ... hundred ... million ... dollars"

The plan was to turn Newark into what Zuckerberg called "a symbol of educational excellence for the whole nation," spent on retaining the best teachers, and creating environments that would produce successful students and, one day, graduates.
...

Between 2010 and 2012, The New Yorker reports that "more than twenty million dollars of Zuckerberg’s gift and matching donations went to consulting firms with various specialties: public relations, human resources, communications, data analysis, [and] teacher evaluation." Many of the consultants were being paid upwards of $1,000 a day.

“Everybody’s getting paid but Raheem still can’t read," Vivian Cox Fraser, president of the Urban League of Essex County, was quoted saying.

Today, the money is pretty much gone, and Newark has hardly become that symbol of excellence. . . . .

I guess I didn't break it down, but yeah, that is an average rate, maybe on the low side depending on who the consultant is.

Still, they have nothing to show for it and they pissed away this guy's donation.

The main problem with American education is the focus on pedagogy instead of the subject and knowledge of the discipline.

Maybe next time, he could simply give it to the Fed Gov. instead? We know they would handle it wisely.

The main problem with American education is the method of pedagogy on which it's focused.

Me too.

It's why I quit giving major amounts of money to hands-off charities.

Say what? I'd say you have that backward. The most brilliant scientist in the world is lost if you can't reach kids and manage a classroom. Someone average in content can teach the material to kids if they know how to reach them and manage a classroom.

you could throw billions at any failing school system in the country but unless you have parents that care about their kids education, vote (and hold accountable) for who is on the school board, care and montior quality of the teachers, and hold their kids accountable for behaving in school and reaching a goal, it will never change.

I think a big problem we have in education is the fact there are many teachers average in content or worse. Why should someone ever be just average in content and try to teach someone?

Additionally average is scary when you think about it.

I know a ton of people that can teach a group of 14 year olds about cell structure. I know far fewer people who can effectively get a group of 14 year olds to sit still and pay attention to what they are saying for and hour.
