Birders - think this is migration?

Our Academy is not near any major waterway, marsh or swamp. Bayou Robert is maybe a mile or so away, but I grew up on it and never saw one of these. Anyway, this poor guy was laying against the front of the building.

They can live in bigger ditches or drainage canals

Interesting. Never seen one anywhere around here other than this one that did not see the giant white store

I think it's a Sora, but I am not comfortable with the Rails.

I thought it might be some type of rail but wasn't sure. Do you have a bird book you recommend or an app for identifying birds.

what is that, I would say rail of some sort, but the beak is so short. And why is he so tired, he must have flown a while, or maybe he hi jacked on the grill of a truck coming from down south.

I have a bird book in almost every room of my house. I like Sibley's(sp?) The Field Guide is good. I hear iBird is good on ios. I have a windows ap on my tablet I really like.

I second Sibley's. This is the one we have. LSUCouyon gave it to the lil Foots. We use it all the time.
