What does the star tattoo mean??? (Example pic of Giselle added)

I see many women with star tattoos lately and many times they are below the waist or on a woman's wrist. These tattoos also seem common with some men. Do these stars symbolize something or are they just the current barbwire white trash tattoo?

The Star tattoos took off about 10 years ago it seemed like. I thought they were done now?
