For those of you young OBr's that don't know, if your aluminum boat ever fills with water, just pull the drain plug while the boat is running. The water will fly right out!
I just had a discussion with a very avid outdoorsman who'd never heard of this.
Just remember to put it back in before you stop

quote:

With about 6 inches of water in the bottom of my old trusty Jon Boat, I told my Buddy Lenny to "take the helm Bubba, I gotta go pull the drain plug"... The look on his face was priceless as he asked me if'n I was nuts...

quote:

the water inside the bottom of you boat will be sucked out while you are under-way when you pull the plug at the back of the boat

quote:

On a 12' without a bilge pump where you would have to hand-bail, pulling the plug works like a charm. You need to be on plane and remember to put it back.on both of my boats (12' and 18') I can't reach the plug from in the boat so I can't do this but I always did it in my dad's boat as a kid.

quote:

Saw my grandfather do this many times on the same boat that I now own. Works well if your can get it to plane. Had the same "what the H$#l" look when I was about 13 yrs old and in the middle of nowhere Michigan UP.

That's an old trick, but with a little bit of preparation you can keep it from getting to that point. We always kept one of these rolling around back by the transom and plug and stayed on top of the situation. Only a dumb arse would let it fill so much you needed to get it on plane and pull the plug.

One fishing trip, the trolling motor battery bounced around and smashed the metal tube. We weren't about to let it ruin our fishing trip. We just cranked up the motor every 1/2 hour, pulled the plug, and drained the water out.

on john boats, most people put the plug in from the inside.

Do it all the time.

Ride in plenty of leaky boats.

I took an old 17' McKee out in the gulf once on a flat day and hit the close rigs out of Venice. We had another bay boat with us since it was single engine. We discovered the boat slowly filling up with water in the back and, since we were diving, we had masks and dove in to check the hull. Sure enough there was a small crack/hole on the bottom of the boat near the transom. So, throughout the day, we would have to pull the plug and drive around slow in circles to drain the water out of the boat. I also thought this was common knowledge.

Sounds like you could have used a bleach bottle scoop.

I'm always skeptical when I get in a buddys boat and see one of those on the floor.

I probably do this 10 times a year during duck season. I will say the first time i saw my dad do this i was a little shocked at age 6.

Looks like the pic above shows why you dont stick a plug in or reach to pull out on the outside part of the transom while running on plane.

Also a good trick when you forget to put the plug in at launch.
Launched and tied the boat off to the dock, went park the truck. Come back to about 6" of water in the bottom. Immediately realizing I forgot to put the plug in, I hop in and haul arse (plowing water) out of the no wake. Ole green jeans sitting just around the corner sees me and flips his lights on. Without coming off step, I wave him up to me, "Sir, shut down the outboard," "Can't, forgot the plug," "Roger, carry on."

Have done it. Then had to fish around with upper body in water in february trying to find the hole. Hehe
