Are there any NBA title teams that won with a bad/less-than-average front court?

Has a team ever won an NBA championship via primarily outstanding 3-point shooting or guard play despite having a not good/bad front court?

Having this discussion with my work friends. Even those Bulls teams had some very good rebounders and scrappy front court play.

Heat didn’t have a monster big man, but Lebron can play down low very well and Bosh is an all-star talent at forward

If not, the landscape of the NBA is changing/has changed. You'll likely see it in the not-so-distant future after Anthony Davis retires.

Bulls are probably the closest team to winning without much of a front court.

Maybe the Mavs

Mavs had Tyson Chandler.... I get he wasnt dominating on offense but he was a huge part of their success due to his D and rebounding.

I just looked at the list of NBA champs.... I dont think there was a team with bad bigs that won an NBA title.

The Bulls had Rodman, who is arguably the best rebounder ever. He made a huge impact without scoring.

The Pistons didn't get much scoring per say from their bigs.

The Wallaces only totaled like 25 points per game that year.

They played good D though

And they rebounded.

Rebounding and playing great D makes them above average in my book. They made a huge impact on the game, without scoring that much. They knew their role and were great at it.

Ben Wallace averaged 9.5ppg, 12.4rebs, and 3.0 blocks and 1.8steals that year. Thats a monster stat line.

And Rasheed Wallace was like 14ppg, 7 rebs, and 2 blocks per game.

They didnt dominate in points, but when you have Billups and Hamilton you dont need them too. But they still made a huge impact.

Honestly, the Heat probably had the weakest front court in memory. I get that LBJ can play every spot and rebound. But on paper, its pretty much just Bosh. And hes not exactly a big that lives in the paint either.

Well, only 5 guys per team can be on the court at one time.

So if you have sub-par players at 2 positions out of those 5, you probably aren't going to win a championship.

Just like you probably aren't going to win a championship with a bad or below average back court.

Sure, you can have a weak-link player and be good 4/5 spots... but you aren't winning a title if you are bad in 2/5.

Last Lakers 2 peat with Gasol and Bynum. Bynum was plagued by injury and really was only reliable a portion of the back to back titles. Gasol carried the front court and he really was never that great.

What??

Gasol averaged 19 and 11. Lamar Odom was on that team as well and averaged 11 and 10. Bynum was hurt a lot, but when he played he was a 10/10 guy.

That team had a solid front court. Def above average. And Gasol was really really good. And really efficient.

The 3 point shot is mostly a recent fad.

The Sonics won in '79 with Marvin Webster having his last good year before signing a big deal with the Knicks, a rookie Jack Sikma, an old Paul Silas, and point forward John Johnson. Most of their points came from Gus Williams, Dennis Johnson, and Downtown Freddie Brown.

I think Dennis Awtrey was the backup center.

Nevermind, I was thinking of the '78 team with Webster, which lost in the finals.

Wat

Odom, Gasol, and Bynum was one of the 10 greatest front courts ever.

Great topic. I'm searching all the old filing cabinets in my brain to find one other than Chicago. Maybe 71 Milwaukee - nope. Had Jabbar.

What about the 1975 Warriors with Rick Barry?
