I'm going to make a long story very short:

I have a co-worker who recently cock blocked me for an advancement at my position. The advancement is still taking place despite his objections. Even though he soured a bit of our friendship, I still care for the guy and want the best for him.

I was pulled into my bosses office recently and was made aware that they are doing away with said friends job because he has been mostly ineffective. It currently stands that I will absorb the work from his position. The complex part of things is that my friend has no idea that this is coming and I feel a little conflicted about the situation.

On the one hand, there is a selfish side of my heart that wants this to take place because of what he attempted to do to me. Sort of a revenge kind of thing.

On the other, I truly care about him and I feel it's my duty to make him aware of what some of the whispers are. Then again, that just might not be any of my business.

I don't know. Thoughts?

Don't bother telling him the inevitable. It isn't your job. They'll give him time to find something else.

Wouldn't he be able to figure it out when he starts training you to do his job?

It is your boss's problem, not yours. Let it ride.

Go ahead and tell him. If you want to lose your new position too.

He's your friend but you aren't responsible for him. He made his own bed.

Keep your mouth shut. Be a good friend and offer support once he's fired.

You didn't cause or contribute to his inefficiency, did you?

If not, then mind your own business.

I understand but it is not your place to speak...he doesn't work for you nor is he responsible to you nor are you responsible for his performance...that belongs to somebody else

Worry about YOUR business not his.

And remember the whole phrase, "it's not personal it's business." I'm sorry you see him as a friend but when it comes to your career and livelihood, you have to worry about you first. And that's not selfish, it's selfless

Ok so first off. No one does this.

Secondly. You two obviously aren't good friends because how in the world would your boss tell you this BEFORE laying him off? Unless of course your boss is an idiot.

Something is fishy here.

That being said, if all this is accurate then just tell him he's going to get laid off. Any chance there is an Indian guy there too that will be laid off? Because the three of you could plant a virus into the bank software that takes the fractions of a penny normally rounded off and send them to a bank account. Just make sure your friend doesn't over look some mundane detail.

I don't think I contributed to his him being ineffective. I did have an indirect impact on his business though. Unintentionally, his clients became much more interested in what was going on in my neck of the woods and jumped ship.

Everyone knows I have focused on my area alone but because of my growing success some of his clients became interested in what we were doing and began investing. Even my friend would acknowledge that I never pursued his clients. They just jumped. Which just adds to the tension.
