Gov. Jindal announces plans for IndyCar race in Jefferson Parish

By Jed Lipinski, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

Gov. Bobby Jindal announced Monday (May 5) that IndyCar, an American-based racing series, is developing plans for a race to be held at NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale in 2015.

Jindal, speaking between two cherry-red race cars at NOLA Motorsports Park, said the event would be known as the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana and could attract up to 80,000 spectators over the course of the three-day event. He estimated the direct economic impact of the event could be about $100 million over a three year period.

Should the Legislature approve the proposal, Jindal said, the state will provide $4.5 million to NOLA Motorsports Park for improvements to the facility and the track. Mark Miles, the CEO of IndyCar, said the funds would go toward increasing the safety of the course while also adding turning zones to make the race more exciting and, in turn, drawing new fans to the sport.

Pretty cool.

I remember back in the day going to the grand prix du mardi gras downtown. Was a good event

That really is pretty fricking cool.

But it would be even more awesome if Louisiana could build and hold a nascar track with races regularly taking place. Never understood why Louisiana doesn't have one.

NASCAR isn't giving out any days anytime soon. They are struggling to sell out the venues they have

Great story here, though.

This is true. The circuit of the Americas in Austin hasn't done it in the 1st 2 years. Plus the economy push hasn't been near what they had expected.

NOLA has an awesome track and great facilities in general, but they would need some upgrades for spectators (like grandstands). Went to the last AMA Superbike race they had there. Too much flat ground, so you can't see much other than what's right in front of you. Love the track though - I ran the Porsche on the track several times last year. And for anyone who hasn't hit the rental karts yet, it's worth the trip for that alone.

Agreed.

Track is great but will need better place for the fans to watch from.

Are they ever going to finish out the south course/loop?

Not bad for a place Laney told me he built "just to race his cars" and "I don't care if it ever makes money."

The best place to watch from, if you can't get inside the track, is the backside where houses are supposed to go. But, if you ask the guys in the control room they will probably let you on the inside of it.

Will be there in a New York second, even living in Montana as I now do. Used to go to the Indy 500 on a regular basis and went to the Indy race at Belle Isle in Michigan many years ago. I can guarantee you , even if you are not a race car fan, you will enjoy seeing Indy racing cars at the Motorsports park in Avondale. Hats off to all involved and certainly worth going to.
