IMHO the influential TV show ever is I Love Lucy, but this one is up there

LINK

quote:

"Sopranos" fan? "Breaking Bad" binge-watcher? "Mad Men" admirer?

Take a moment to thank "Hill Street Blues."

"There is no 'Sopranos' without 'Hill Street Blues,' " says Syracuse University pop culture professor Robert Thompson, who wrote a book tracing "Hill Street's" influence. "Matt Weiner ('Mad Men') and Vince Gilligan ('Breaking Bad') and David Chase ('The Sopranos') and all these people ought to wake up every morning and send a note to 'Hill Street Blues.' "

quote:

It was a serialized mixture of drama and comedy featuring diverse, colorful and three-dimensional characters -- the policemen and policewomen of the rundown Hill Street Station. It was well-written, boldly directed and creatively revolutionary.

Still, initial ratings were poor and audiences were confused. It stayed on through a combination of key corporate support, determination and a little bit of luck.

The result? Two decades of dominance for the Peacock Network -- "Hill Street" was the first cornerstone of its Thursday lineup -- and the bounty of novelistic TV series we see today.

"It just changed the rules of TV," its producer, Steven Bochco, said in an interview.

No. Look at the talent both on-screen and on the writing staff that show had. Unreal.

Off the top of my head 5 influential TV shows:

1. I Love Lucy -- the sitcom template

2. Dragnet -- the police procedural, still being imitated 60 years later

3. Monday Night Football -- the Roone Arledgization of sports

4. Hill Street Blues

5. The Real World (or whatever it was called; I never watched it) -- the first germ of the reality pandemic

The Real World is a reality television program on MTV originally produced by Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray. First broadcast in 1992, the show, which was inspired by the 1973 PBS documentary series An American Family, is the longest-running program in MTV history and one of the longest-running reality series in history, credited with launching the modern reality TV genre.

60 Minutes - news show

it's certainly important but I decided to leave it off my top 5

the jokes were more vulgar than before but in form it was a conventional sitcom

Influential but it was done before in the '80s as Star Search and the '50s (and even before that on radio) as the Amateur Hour

Can any show really top SNL in terms of most influential?

ETA: I'll also nominate the Simpsons.

Yes, plenty. SNL isn't the first sketch comedy show.

Hill Street Blues!

I loved that show!

I think All in the Family was ground breaking and certainly influential and trail blazing.

it's closer to last than first

even at the time it was seen simply as a rock and roll version of Your Show of Shows
