Watching the 30-for-30 the other night about the '83 QB class got me curious. After doing a little homework(using NFL draft tracker), is this the biggest bust for the Saints?
Our picks that year:
2nd-- Steve Korte
3rd-- John Tice
3rd-- Cliff Austin
4th-- Gary Lewis
8th-- David Greenwood

***The hindsight is 20-20 picks:

Karl Mecklenburg was taken in the 12th by Denver
Jesse Sapolu was taken in the 11th by San Fran
Tim Krumrie was taken in the 10th by Cincy
Mark Clayton was taken in the 8th by Miami
Richard Dent was taken in the 8th by Chicago
Charles Mann was taken in the 3rd by Washington

Obviously other teams missed on these guys too, but the Saints made it a habit for a loooong time. But, was this their worst draft?

95-97 are pretty ugly. '03 is bad but Stinchcomb at least gives you something.

Trading away all of one's draft choices for the year for one player is done how many times?

1999 is the answer to this question. If the Saints would have drafted a Drew Brees with the pick then I might reconsider. Ditka was lazy. The lack of bodies from the missing picks hurt the organization for a while.

You're dumb to respond this^ way. If you disagree, back it up with facts.

It wasn't just the whole draft that year. It was picks the following year too. Ditka was such a dumbass.

Look at all of Ditka's draft picks with the Saints. If he had 20 more picks in 99 he would've blown them. Ricky, despite the cost, is by far his best pick.

Even if Williams was his best pick (I'm not necessarily agreeing, just allowing); NOT having any more choices in the '99 draft as the premium to get Williams was too exorbitant a price to pay. There's a reason NFL teams don't do this.

Looking at it and the whole draft class of '95 was pretty weak. I don't really see a lot of names jumping out at me in that class.
The '96 draft looks like they blew it.
**Ray Lewis
Brian Dawkins
Teddy Bruschi
Joe Horn
Zack Thomas
Marco Rivera
THAT could have been our draft. All were available after our "JeRod Cherry" like picks.

I think we own the worst draft all-time because of this. It's one of those things that make you shudder when you're unfortunate enough to think about it.

remember the draft when the Saints gave up two picks to get Johnathon Sullivan. Those picks could have been Quaint Bolden and Jason Whitten..

1968 draft:

17 players drafted
7 players made it to an NFL roster
Only 4 of those 7 ever played for the Saints
3 of those 7 played in 1968 only
2 of the remaining 4 played 2 years
The remaining two played until 1972
1 of those 2 (Kevin Hardy) never played a down for the Saints
The other one (Gene Howard) had 14 INTs in his career. Only 5 of them came for the Saints

Overall NFL statistics for the Saints class of 68

142 combined NFL game appearances
44 combined NFL starts (only 6 for the Saints)
14-38 passing, 129 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT
5 rushing yards (by the QB) (3 RBs were drafted)
0 receptions for 0 receiving yards (including a 3rd round WR)
14 INTs

That's it.

Larry Csonka was drafted one pick after the Saints first round pick

Three Hall of Famers were picked in the third round after the Saints picked Dave Syzmankowski

Curley Culp was drafted one pick after the Saints' spot in the 2nd round, which was traded to the Rams (see below)

Jim Kiick was drafted three picks after the Saints picked Ronnie Lee South in the 5th

Marv Hubbard was picked one pick after the Saints picked Bennie Blocker (another RB) in the 11th round

The Saints did not have their original first round pick because it went to Green Bay for Jimmy Taylor, who retired after playing one year for the Saints.

The Saints got a first round pick back for trading Gary Cuozzo, but the commissioner made them give the pick (Kevin Hardy) to San Francisco for signing Dave Parks

The Saints did not have a second round pick that year because they traded it to the Rams in exchange for sharing the Rams scouting combine info for the 1967 draft

WTF

We were so dumb. How often did that happen back then? We'll give you a 2nd round pick for info on players that we can now not draft.
