If you had $800 to buy a new shotgun for ducks, what would it be?

Got some cash layin around and I currently have to borrow my FIL shotgun when I go duck hunting. What are some reasonably priced auto shotguns, not pump, that are out there? I was looking at the Beretta A400 xtreme, but $1600 is alil out of my price range.

Supposed to be.

Stoeger also makes a pretty good one. Don't remember the model name but it's pretty much a direct benelli copy with the action spring around the tube instead of in the stock.

I have a franchi affinity and it is a good gun for the price. Comfortable to shoot and has been reliable.

Negative. More lemons than good ones.

Find a used Beretta 390 or better yet, just buy a new one for $800.

Didn't know you needed a 3.5". Then add a couple of bills to your budget and buy a VersaMax. Heard good things about that shotgun.

Stoegers are a gamble.

Franchi's are ok. I wouldn't buy a Stoeger. They might be made in the same place that Benelli's are but they aren't even close in quality. That's like saying a Tikka is the same as a Sako. They might look similar and be made by the same people but there's a reason for the price difference. If the franchi was the same as a benelli (like 99% of franchi owners think), beretta wouldn't sell them for cheaper than Benelli's. Beretta owns them all by the way. With that said, even though you said no to a pump, I would get a benelli super nova and spend the rest of the $800 on a floating case, hi viz sight, sling, and shells because in my opinion that super nova will have a lot less problems than a franchi down the road.

Another roll of the dice. The only Remington shotgun I would even consider these days is the tried and true 870 or the VersaMax.

That's where you get into a black hole when you are at that $800 price point concerning the need for the 3.5". You are pretty much regulated to pumps like the Nova/870 with $$$ to spare or gambles like the Stoeger/Mossturd etc. The VersaMax seems to be the best at that right over the grand level price and then you have the proven but costly Extrema/SBE II/Vinci shotguns.

Grew up shooting Browning A-5's and now have a Benelli but one of my favorite guns ever was a Remington pump I picked up for 50 bucks at a pawn shop. Ended up using it for ducks.

EXACTLY!!! Might just throw in a few xtra $$ and get the versamax... Guess that calls for a trip to Cabelas!!!
