Some of the black people I worked with growing up were the hardest workers doing manual labor for low pay.

I know plenty of lazy whites and blacks too. Just saying.

What I got out of the article is that drug dealers, hookers and thieves work hard at what they do, just non traditional type employment ........or did I just misunderstand the authors point

She still works hard but will be only judged for not following traditional rules, which is unfortunate because there are so many hardworking people like us who are forced to create our own industries as a direct result of being isolated by society. To me that poses a bigger question. Why employment inequality for African-Americans is always identified as laziness? Hire us.

As a college grad I would have expected him to understand that we don't always view people as "lazy" in the simplistic form of the word.

Use your brain. If you're too "lazy" to really sit down and think about why you aren't being hired on somewhere, then yes, you will be discriminated against, but not because of skin color.

Dreads, corn rows, saggy pants, excessive jewelry, etc... have all become synonymous with poor work ethic, lack of dependability and being uneducated. This idea is not limited to black Americans alone. Walking into a job interview looking like trailer trash in a wife beater, jorts and tons of ridiculous arm tattoos is going to yield you the same "discrimination" based on appearance, apparel and attitude.

Is it fair to make on the fly assumptions about individuals based on split second appearance? Maybe, maybe not, but I bet you wouldn't judge someone for being suspicious of the guy in line at the bank with a ski mask and gloves on with his hands in his jacket pocket....maybe he's just cold.....

At 18, I’d often slice the tips of my fingers up while shaving marble-size pieces of crack into smaller bits before shoving them into long glass vials that I rocked off for $6 a pop. I’d suck the blood off my fingers, rubber band the vials into a bundle, tuck them in my sock and then go off to my block around 8:30 a.m. to set up shop for my 10- to 12-hour shift.

Why not put that good work ethic into something more worthwhile that WON'T get you killed or locked up?

Drug dealing takes balls and ruthlessness, but you don't exactly have to be a hard worker.

Is that a condescending poor black people, or a qualifier to their socioeconomic status?

Yeah it's why I'm "just sayin", OT is gonna OT and I love it for that, just had to add and pay my respects in a way to a deceased black man who taught me education is better than breaking your back for someone else.

One of the best articles I've read in a long time. Though it won't even be completely understood by most posters on here.
