Snake ID thread.

Found this guy today working in the yard. Don't know a got damn thing about snakes and was wondering if anyone knew what kind it was. Sorry for the bad pic. It was very small maybe a foot and a half.

Baby Racer...Are you in Southern Mississippi as your profile suggests? Probably a juvenile Southern Black Racer. I'll see if I can find a pic.

I am in South MS.

I got pretty damn close and it didn't charge.

The real story is fiance was in the yard folding up a tarp and it was on it. Runs it house out of breath in a mini panic attack. no pics sorry.

Juvenile Southern Black Racer:



Husband said there's a slight chance it's a juvenile Eastern Coachwhip, but he's pretty sure it's the baby Southern Black Racer.

Neither is venomous.

do they climb trees? it looks like one that was in the deer stand with me

Hubby said yes, they both can climb, but you probably had a Texas or Gray Rat snake in the stand with you. Similar coloring & markings, eyes are smaller and pattern is a bit different. Southern Black Racers don't look like that when they're big though--they lose their blotches and become dark gray or black. Rat snakes love to climb and are typical deer stand companions.

the grey on the one in the tree with me was a lighter shade
