How far do take down your reels to clean them yourself? I've been lightly spraying some Lew's baitcasters with fresh water after each use in salt water. I bought them about three months ago, and they're already not as smooth and make a little noise every once and a while. Thinking of tearing them all the way down this afternoon, but I've never gone past pulling the spool out.

Also, what do you do to clean up your reels after use in salt water. I've heard everything from rinsing, to not rinsing due to pushing salt into the reel. I've finally got some higher quality reels and I want to treat them right.

Hose water and reel magic is all I have done for the 15+ years I've owned my rob & reels. The shitty ones bit the dust after 8-10 years, but the more expensive ones (Calcutta 151 and Shimano Stradic 4000) still work like a champ. Never have broken them down

I now just own the top quality Rod & reels because I can afford them...I may start taking a little more care of breaking them down once a year or something.

I always spray mine down with fresh water. Also be sure to spray your rods off too, because once the coating around the eyes on the rods breaks down the eyes will rust. I have had this happen on rods costing as much as $80. You did not mention where you are located, but I take mine each year to Superior Tackle in Baton Rouge and have them clean and oil the reels. Breaking them down yourself is fine, but if you lose or damage one small part you may be without the use of the reel until you can order the new replacement part.

The Sustains?

Thanks again for that heads up. My wife thought I needed my head checked for driving down to Houma to pick them up Thursday night.

As far as maintenance, I generally spray the reels with fresh water when I'm cleaning the boat. I've never really had an issue, if I feel them getting tight I'll take them to a pro and have him do a full check.

Fill a bucket of water up place reels in it and soak for a day or two..remove and dry then ready to use again. Been doing this for many years and my reels are like new

I've got two Lew's Speed Spool Tournament reels that are about $150. I heard a little squeeking and the sounded a little rough on Saturday morning. Didn't notice anything Friday afternoon. I've always rinsed them. I just expect them to last more that a season without having to get them worked on. Never gotten them wet or anything. Plus now I do have a couple of Sustains and I don't want $600+ worth (even though I didn't pay that) of reels to go to crap before they should. I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to keep my reels in tip-top shape.

I can have mine completely disassembled in like 3 minutes. They are pretty damn easy
