i plan to paint mine and i don't want to have to redo it in 2 years when it fades.

i want that INDUSTRIAL DANCE REMIX black those farmers use to paint miles of fences that never seems to wear off.

anyone know what they use?

This. People have been doing it for ages. You can also treat barns with this. It repels insects, moisture.

Creosote is a known carcinogen and has been pretty much banned from residential uses.

I dont think you can buy Creosote off the shelf anymore but there are a number of new safer substitutes like Rustoleom's CreoCoat. I dont think any of the subs hold up as well as the real deal used to.

FWIW, railroad ties, timber utility poles, and timber piles are coated in the same stuff. You may try to find someone in those professions. A warning though... that crap stinks and the odor can travel great distances. I wouldnt want it anywhere near my house.

Someone should tell that to the lumber yard / Creosote plant off the Pineville Highway in Alexandria.

But you can still eat it?

quote:

Current uses
Commercially available preparations of "liquid smoke", marketed to add a smoked flavor to meat and aid as a preservative, consist primarily of creosote and other constituents of smoke.[40] Creosote is the ingredient that gives liquid smoke its function; guaicol lends to the taste and the creosote oils help act as the preservative.

I bought this last year (June I think) and painted a new fence I put in. It goes on very easy and I applied 2 coats. It drys quickly, but it seems to stay tacky for several months. I did lots of research on this before purchase, this is what a lot of horse fences are painted with around KY. For me, so far, its holding up well and is not showing any signs of wear, but I'm holding in farm animals either.

I love the smell of creosote. It reminds me of the Army and the stench of death in the morning

Yeah I was a little worried about it at first, but even with it tacky it never came off on you. It is not tacky anymore. At this point I would not hesitate you use again.
