Imagine you are a college senior graduating in May faced with the following job offers with the same base salary:

1. Baton Rouge area, large company, old company, growing company, potential to make OT, advancement based on seniority, great health/vision/dental insurance, high insurance premiums

2. Houston area (Magnolia, TX), small company, young company (only 8 years old and recently expanded into the Houston area), rapidly growing company, opportunity for rapid advancement, great health insurance (no vision or dental) plan with health savings accounts, low insurance premiums, no OT pay, relocation expenses paid, frequent travel to West Texas and North Dakota required (around 25-50% travel)

Base salary of both firms is the same. The position is the same. You have a serious relationship with another LSU student who still has a year of school left. All of your family and most of your friends are in the Baton Rouge area, only a couple friends live in the Houston Metroplex.

What say the money board?

Houston for sure IMO.. For me just the fact of a job not based on seniority would be my major selling point but hey that's just me

Same base salary seems to imply take-home is very different. OT and insurance premiums seem to have an effect and are not equal.

Again, personally, I'd stay here. I did it. It depends on what you're looking for in your job/life. There may be a sacrifice in your career by doing this, but I chose my family over that.

Otherwise, flip a coin. It works half the time.

I did some digging on the 401k plans and here's what I've got:

The BR company matches 50% of what you put in, which is a max of 6% of your salary.

The Houston company has a 401k system where they match your contributions up to 3% of your salary with a 1 year vesting period.

Given the hypo, I'd take #1 for now and keep my eyes open for something better. Assuming you're productive, seniority-based promotions will eventually drive you crazy

Assuming this is a real situation... Although promotions are based off seniority, I'd bet when they see talent, they promote. Thus, if you're talented and willing to work harder than anyone there. I bet you'll move up. Just MO.

2.

Reasons?

A. Start with the girl. She's a drag on you. You are young. You need to establish yourself and your career and you do not need a hanger-on.

B. experience life and its challenges. You are comfortable in your local surroundings. You need to embrace change in orderto move forward.

C. Forget everything you've ever thought about in terms of a career with a company. The reality? It used to be you were hired, hung around and moved up through seniority. Today, the average length of stay is 3 to 5 years. People want to move up. Companies want new blood and new ideas.

D. There is some seriously fine tail to chase in Houston. Refer ack to A. above.

If networking can benefit your productivity, that weighs in favor of Baton Rouge. Good luck.

Baton Rouge job..... established company... advancement based on seniority because its a good enough job that people do not want to leave..... Texas job can still go belly up
