My wife and I pull around $90,000 cash, all non-taxable, as full-time students. That doesn't include tuition, books, school supplies, and one new computer a year. All reimbursed(and always at a rate well above what we actually spent). This is through a combination of disability, retirement pension, a couple VA programs, and the GI Bill.

Not looking to make a point, or 'play gotcha'. Just wondering what the average taxpayer thinks. That's quite a bit of money.

See nothing wrong with a disabled retired vet getting what is due him.

thanks for you service

I'm 35. It's a combination of injuries. I was medically retired.

edit-I feel like I should add that I don't feel guilty. Just it's a lot of money is all.

Hell no, I don't.

eta- now that I think about it, we both qualify for a computer a year. We haven't collected.

Honestly, I really don't know... I don't know the worth of anyone anymore... you may be worth twice that or half that... and unfortunately no matter how much research I do or can possibly do without dedicating my life to it I will I ever know...

I can tell you this though... do you feel like you are getting more than you deserve? Really look at what everyone else that is poor is doing to survive... if you feel you are getting more than you deserve then you probably are....

I thank you for your service to our country though.. I'd rather people that gave up 1/4 of their physical ability be provided with 1/4 of my income.

This is a great post and is what I was hoping to get from this thread.

I do feel I'm getting a bit more than I deserve. I've known several other guys that have the same rating as me, who I feel 'deserve' it more. Despite my rating, I feel pretty healthy. I'm going to college and chilling. I can still live a normal life. But am I to turn down money? Would you turn down money?

I don't know your situation but military disability is a broken system like many govt system. The govt tries it's damnedest to get people on their dole and that sickens me. I didn't take the money because I didn't need it and don't think I deserved it.

I think this a big issue and a big part of our problem... you for example didn't take money cause you didn't think you deserved it... others take money when they don't deserve it...

I qualify for welfare... but I don't take it.. because I don't want to rely on the government... even though I work 40 hours a week at night and can barely make ends meet... and as I said in another thread.. I'm not complaining I actually like my job...but affordable healthcare would be nice.

When I went through the separation classes a lady from the VA told us several times that EVERYONE deserved VA disability. She then coached us on what to say and do on our physicals to get rated. It was sickening. I told her what she was talking about was fraud but she stuck to her "all of us deserve disability" philosophy. I do hope those who need it are able to get it.

Naa as I said I didn't need it. If I had a few kids at the time with no real job outlook I doubt I would have had the conviction to say no. But our system is not going to support everyone that can sign up for "welfare". It's going to collapse under this weight at some point.

Is there a category that deserves it?

Use lose a body function IMO. As the other poster mentioned PTSD isn't going away because you get a check in the mail. And enabling them to avoid work situations isn't going to help them recover. But that's just me.
I do wonder why disability is needed so much more now that we have moved from a society that requires physical abilities to earn money and allows you to sit at a computer (or stand). It seems like we're using disability as a civil restitution fee of something wrong with someone vs judging the true ability to get work in the future. Not sure if that was the original intention for it.

I know a working professional that makes 500k, appears fully functional, but has been getting medical disability for years. Is that the intent? I think people like that make it harder for legitimate claims to get approved.

Holy shite. Really? Use or lose a body function, or quit being a bitch?

Yes... I think so.. but it's hard to determine how much you deserve. And if you were in combat and saw others die who were on your level, and then you turn around and receive benefits while your dead partner's wife receives less or the same it would be very difficult to deal with IMO, and not right at all.

Also, I'M REALLY SORRY if this sounds cold hearted.. I rephrased it about 5 times cause more sympathetic ones didn't make sense or were confusing, also it's just very difficult for someone to see someone die and then take money for their trama about the person dieing while feeling guilt about the one that died.

I hope you feel peace with anything you witnessed and that you can come to terms with what you deserve.
