I am hosting a fish fry on good friday and I need a rough estimate on how much fish I need. it will be in the ball park of 20 adults and 11-12 children(ages range from 3-13)

how much fish should I get. it will be cat fish being that my source of trout i usually get didnt come through for me this year. TIA

I'm cooking for 200 people Saturday. Fried fish and shrimp fettuccini. I always figure a pound of fish feeds 3 people. I'm going with 1 pound per 4 this weekend because we are also serving the fettuccini.

If I was cooking for 200 people, they'd be eating hot dogs, no doubt.

Yeah buddy! That's a smaller cook for me. Most would be disgusted at the amounts of butter, cream, cheese, etc that I use in the fettuccini.

That will be easier than next weekend. My wife wants a crawfish boil. I'm going to the spillway to run my buddys traps that morning, then driving back to BR to boil the crawfish for the party. I'm going to be worn out.

Some good info above. For adults, mixed company, I'd count of 1/2 lb per head.

Feeds 60 people

10lbs peeled shrimp
10 sticks of butter
6lbs onions
2 stalks of celery
3 bell peppers
6 lbs jalapeno cheese (velveta)
1 quart of half and half
84 oz of noodles
parsley flakes
garlic powdwer
green onions
salt and pepper or seasoning to taste
milk or more half and half to thin out consistency.

Brown veggies in pot with couple sticks of butter. Add half and half and a little milk. Add the rest of butter. Add your cheese (cubed). Throw in noodles that are already cooked. Throw in shrimp and cook until done. Add seasoning or salt and pep to taste. I always thin out with a little milk to my liking. Very easy and is a crowd pleaser.

This is not the way I do my fettuccini at home because I would never use Velveta, but great for large parties.

A 15 lb box of 3/5 Basa will be plenty.

Maybe so, but you will still know you're lying to yourself in the end. I would go with 10-14 lbs. on the fish front. ETA three more pounds for the kids.

We used to have a big fish fry on Good Friday for years. I hired a seafood joint to do the frying. We also had boiled crawfish and some other foods with it. I always ordered 1/2 pound of fish per person. We had a mix of adults and kids. Always seemed to work out. On occasion, we'd run out and, on occasion, we'd have a little left over, but not much. We also had a truck that served some fair foods like hot dogs (for the non Catholics), funnel cakes, lemonade and sno balls as well.

I've decided people can eat more fried fish by weight than some other things. I know I can, but I bypass the fries and sides most of the time.
