Sorry to ruin your lunch break but I need a little advice. I've had a horrendous case of runs for the last 36 hours. I don't think it's food poisoning, as my family has been on vacation and we all pretty much ate the same food for the past several days. I'm down to passing pretty much straight liquid. Should I take an anti-diarrheal like Immodium?

I've heard two schools of thought on this. School A says that whatever toxins are in you need to be flushed out of your system and that diarrhea is the body's way of doing this.

School B says that diarrhea is a harmful loss of nutrients and fluids and should be stopped medically if need be.

Any of OT doctors, nurses or Grey's Anatomy fans have any thoughts on the matter?

Thanks,
Suffering in Spokane

It's a good thing in that it does flush, but it's also bad because you can't retain nutrients.

You need an IV.

These probably don't have to be mutually exclusive.

It can be flushing the bad stuff out of your system - as well as good stuff. Dehydration is a typical side effect, which can even be lethal in developing countries.

I'd say at least get some Powerade going.

You're dehydrated bro

Gatorade, but limited because of the sugar, water, and rest.

Good luck

I'm trying this, but I have zero appetite. I am downing as much Gatorade as I can, though.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. Whether or not to take this, or let my system flush it out.

after 24 hours of infectious diarrhea, you can start taking antidiarrheal medication -- immodium, lomotil, etc.

and you can always take original pepto bismol as a preventative for traveler's diarrhea

Where did you go on vacation? If somewhere like Mexico, you could have had a drink with ice cubes made with 'bad' water. You may have all 'pretty much' ate the same thing, but even fresh fruit or lettuce washed in 'bad' water could cause it. I'd go to the Dr. if it doesn't stop in the next day or so.

Both are bullshite.

Take some pepto or immodium, drink some gatorade or powerade, and stay near a toilet.

It'll pass.

Ha ha, the funny thing is, we went back home to Louisiana. So yeah, it was sorta like Mexico.

In all honesty though, we did eat out at probably 6 restaurants in our 4 days there. I'm sure you're right. Given the law of averages, the more you eat out, the more likely you will encounter some less than hygienic conditions within the food service industry.

Funny thing is, I was pretty health conscious during this trip. I've lost some 80 pounds since I lived in Louisiana (the food here in Spokane is bland and boring), so I didn't want to eat like a disgusting slob from Lake Charles to Slidell. I laid off the fried/fatty foods the whole time, while my friends and family made fun of me for seeking healthy options at a poboy joint. Ironically, I've lost 7 pounds in the past 48 hours thanks to whatever is slowly killing me from the inside out.

Cranberry juice. Not cran-apple or cran-grape bullshite, but real cranberry juice. The more real juice in it the better.

Give it a try. You'll be impressed.
