I think too many people are acting like Kiper/McShay/Mayock have THE LIST, and if your team deviates from it, your team is "stupid."
If Mel Kiper would have had his way, Jimmy Clausen would have been a top five pick. Remember when they were losing their mind because Brady Quinn "fell?" Who was more accurate in their assessments? The "experts" or the teams' front office?
Which round did Keenan Allen go in last year? 42 picks before Justin Hunter. I don't remember Mel Kiper fussing about that.

I don't look at the mocks. I just familiarize myself with various rankings, read about the guys, and make a loose ranking of my own in my head.

Trust me I hate to agree with all the shite he tries to give me, but I've said the same thing myself on many occasions.
Prime example is the Saints not having Jones in the same bubble as Vaccaro, yet the Steelers thought they were getting a steal.

It's a crapshoot. A fairly educated and well-researched crapshoot. But nobody has the answer.

Exactly, which is why I hate when people just say we'll draft so and so to fix our problem.
We have a pretty good track record with mid to late Olinemen, but there are guys people forget about like Tennant.
So saying let's draft a center and call it a day doesn't sit well with me.

I remember in 2006 when the Saints made a trade with Philly and took Jahri Evans (I believe in the fourth round).
I can remember a lot of people losing their minds because they took some dope from school they never heard of because Max Jean-Gilles was on the board.
There were two reason why people did this:
1. Some guy I saw at Georgia is better than some nobody from Bloomsburg.
2. Jean-Gilles was high on Mel's list, and Evans was not.
And then it becomes an echo chamber from there and everybody shows how uninformed they really are.

I never even try to pretend that I know anything about players expected to go beyond the 2nd or early 3rd round. It's way too hard to predict at that point. There is some logic you can use to try and guess what will happen in the early rounds because that's where teams pick up the most starters to fill their current needs .. But late round picks are never chosen for that reason so it's conceivable that any team will take any position. There's no reason to even try to predict something like that.
So beyond the first few rounds I am happy with whatever decisions the team makes. Hell, I'm happy with whatever they do in every round (after I've had time to accept it - a la Jarvis Jones / KV debacle).

That's why all these narratives ESPN and NFLN give us on draft day are dishonest and laughable.
Like I said before, remember when the "story of the draft is Brady Quinn's dramatic fall?" Well, who the frick said he fell? Was he on the top five on every team's draft board and they just forgot about him? Were teams too stubborn or stupid not to draft an obvious franchise QB? Because that was the way they acted.
As it turned out, all those teams that passed on them had him rated exactly where he needed to be and Mel and the Browns were stupid. Hell, the narrative should have been "The Browns reached for a hometown QB and screwed the pooch. AGAIN."

To add to that, teams spend millions of $$$$$ getting ready for the draft. They have an entire staff dedicated to scouting players, looking at tape after tape, talking to the college coaches, and have their positions coaches evaluating the players and they still don't get it right all of the time. Too many variables to put into a fool proof formula.
It is now and will always be a crap shoot (that's why there's a rookie scale now in place...minimize the damage for bad decisions).

Yea ive learned to stfu about it the past couple years and just say who I myself want (which doesnt matter) instead of who's gonna be an All Pro. The only time we have come out of the first round and I was excited was the year we got Cam Jordan which was kinda the guy everyone knew we would get. Panned out pretty good id say. (In other words im no Loomis).

Yeah, but teams DO know more than the... ughem.... "Experts." These talking heads do not have the depth of knowledge and research that the teams have, and quite often they get caught up in their own hype. The only guy I enjoy listening to regarding the draft is Mayok. That is it.

I saw DRAFT DAY on Monday... good movie and it gives you a feel for how much of an educated guess the draft really is.
