Spent 3 weeks traveling Australia in hostels and 4 weeks traveling Europe in hostels. Each time I met good friends that we ended up traveling together with and some I still keep in touch with.

You'll meet some weirdos for sure, but you'll also meet alot of cool people also looking to meet random folks.

And they're also fvck dens typically.

I haven't but my dad pretty much lives in hostels. He stays in them about 80% of the time if not more. And he is traveling for 80% of the year. Never told me any horror stories about them. He has stayed in some that had about 12 bunks to a room and some singles.

Went backpacking around China for 2 months about 2 years ago. Probably the single greatest experience of my life. It was fun just hanging out in the lobby, going bar hopping with strangers, and generally just loving life. Highly, highly recommend it. It's not the Ritz or anything, but do it before you get to old. Its kind of weird if you're 35 or older and are staying in a hostel.

Stayed at one in Amsterdam. Hans Brinker. Room had 3 "beds" and 3 lockers. But you are just sleeping there and it's cheap. Had bar and food. Great location.

Does he ever invite you on these sex, I mean business trips? Just Google the hostel you're thinking about staying in. There should be tons of reviews.

I've had mostly good experiences. Many hostels have the option of "dorm style" bunk rooms with like 8-16 or so beds or private rooms with two beds. Idk how old you are (you seem past college age) but being woken up by drunk roommates trying to get into bed is inevitable.

ETA: Forgot to add, most have community bathrooms.

Weirdest experience: Stayed in a 12 person bunk room in Interlaken while there was a trucker festival in town (Pat Green played one night we were there). One morning I woke up to some old man (65+) walking around the bunk room with shite stains all over the back of his pajama pants. He was either oblivious or didn't give a frick. Snuck a picture of the damage.

Prepare to see a bunch of naked european dudes. They don't care about walking around naked over there.

I did in Amsterdam at a hostel right next to the Heineken factory.

It had four sets of bunk beds sharing a single bathroom in our room but there was another shower in the hall. It went fine overall but it was weird that me and the girl I was with shared a room with four strangers.

There were lockers in the lobby though, which was good to lock up valuables. Look for that option as you search.

did this on two different trips thru Europe and no problems with either trip. I would recommend.

I stayed in one in Zurich my first week there when I still hadn't found a place to live. It was creepy as frick. I felt like every dude there was some kind of shady international drug dealer who was about to take all my shite at night.

I did it in Switzerland. Although it was a hostel, ive stayed in La Quintas that were worse. Find one with your own bathroom if possible

It depends on where you stay. The Christian hostels tend to always have vacancies because no one wants to stay there. They tend to have ridiculously early curfews and you'll get hit on by Danish homos.

If you go during peak tourist season (Europe), I'd get a reservation well in advance. Everything will be full except for the undesirable hostels.

I stayed at few different ones when I went with some grad school buddies. Some are similar to hotels, but with fewer amenities in the room. Others were dorm style with bunk beds and showers down the hall.

I thought they were a great way to go on a budget.
