Tom Pelissero:

Bailey has two $250K roster bonuses (5th day of league year, Week 1) and $1.5M base in 2015. So, base value of deal is 2 years, $3.75M.
quote:
However, Bailey can earn up to $3M in incentives/escalators for interceptions, Pro Bowl, playing time. Low-risk move for #Saints.

do incentives count against cap in any way?

Good question. I'm trying to find out more. My twitter feed is blowing up. Looks like Bunkley may have restructured too.

quote:
Incentives fall into two distinct categories in relation to the NFL Salary Cap; “Likely to be earned” and “Not-likely to be earned”. ”LTBE’s” count automatically against a Club’s Salary Cap entering into the season the incentive is tied to. If an “LTBE” is not achieved in the given season, then the Club will receive a credit of the unearned amount towards the following season’s cap number. ”NLTBE’s” don’t count immediately against a Club’s Salary Cap in the given season, but are reconciled at the end of the year and deducted from the following season’s total if achieved.

The terms of cornerback Champ Bailey's two-year deal with the New Orleans Saints were released on Wednesday.
Bailey will make $1.4 million in base salary in 2014 and will count $1.25 million against the 2014 salary cap, according to various reports. He will make $1.5 million in base salary in 2015.
The two-year deal is worth $3.75 million total.
He has a $1.2 million one-time escalator for playing time in 2014 and 2015, according to the Baltimore Sun. In total, he can earn up to $3 million in incentives for interceptions, playing time and making the Pro Bowl.
He has two $250,000 roster bonuses worked into his contract, one which will be due Week 1 and the other on the fifth day of the 2015 league year.

1.5 against 2014 salary cap... so only takes up the extra million of cap space.

Not so fast. Joel Corry:

@MikeTriplett Champ Bailey's cap # is $1.25M. He was active for 5 games in '13. His 6 game 46-man roster bonus doesn't count on the cap.

So i wonder if this means that 250k is not likely to be earned only to mean that it'll count against next yr's cap if earned....

absolutely low risk. high level of play would still make him cheap

I think the $1.25k they are referring to is how much more he'll count against the cap as of now. If his base salary is $1.4M and he has a $250k roster bonus, that puts him at $1.65M next season minus the $420k of the previous player that was in the top 51.
That leaves $1.25 M cap hit.
That leaves $1.25 M cap hit.

Pretty creative contract looking at all the details:
LINK /
We pushed $250k of his hit until next year with a sneaky NLTBE(not likely to be earned) incentive that is actually likely to be earned. If he plays in 6+ games he'll get it, but being that he only played in 5 games last year to league had to assign it the NLTBE label.
Other bonuses are based on pro bowls, ints, and playing time numbers.
So his cap hit will stay at $1.25m this year.
Next year it could be as low as $2.5m if he hits no incentives, and from my understanding he won't be on the books for the max amount because the incentives have to be determined at season's end.
That does mean that a little bit of change(not much at all) could be on our 2016 cap for him even though he'll be a FA.
So basically they spread his cap hit out over 3 years on a 2 year deal and set it up where if he is good for us it will be worth the extra petty change.
