Cap Gurus - Need a tutorial

Guys, I have the attention span of a 5 year old. Can someone tell me how much room we have under the cap? Also, do we have enough cash to sign the draftees? I know there is a formula for some of these guys but I am not sure how it works. Is there a likelihood that we might not be able to sign some of the rookies because of cap issues? I know that not all of the draftees will make the team, but I would like to know how the cap comes into play when trying to sign the new guys.

We probably have about $789,546 to spend still. I'm pretty sure rookie class is taken into account already.

You got to also remember, every player we sign, it only increases the team's total salary by signed players first yr cap number minus 51st ranked player's cap number.
If guy's first yr cap number is 1 million, the increase may only be about 500k roughly speaking.

Yes, I don't see how your reworded question changed anything that wasn't answered previously. Our cap number includes signing our draft class.

I assume the 51st player salary will more than likely be the league minimum for such player.

Correct. I think it may be somewhere around $450k or so give or take a few happy meals.

to be clear, you cannot go over the cap. Any contract signings have to be approved by the league. The allotted amount for rookie contracts is part of the equation.

Because the Saints would appear to have less than the cap space required as shown by blueslover, I think the saints will need to release a player or restructure a deal.

It seems the more you look into capology the more complicated it gets. I follow it cuz I think that cap mgmt can be as vital to team success as on the field play. It is some pretty boring arse accounting kinda stuff tho. You cannot escape value anymore when talking about players.

Cutting Bunkley is a lot tougher than people think. If they cut him by June 1st then yes it would help the cap this year, but next year it would cause a $3.2 million cap hit.
I think the Saints will ultimately try to get him to take less money and if they can't then I guess they would have to cut him even with the cap hit next season.
The main solution right now seems to be signing Jimmy Graham to a long term deal.

On the rookie pool, some places include it in the figure and some don't. I believe the NFLPA's numbers do not include them.
On where we stand now, I'm not completely sure because I have yet to see what Bailey or Bush are getting. Bush may actually wind up costing less than his $1.4m cap hold depending on structure and what incentives the Falcons put in that we had to match.
Say they restructure $8m of a guy's base into bonus and he has 4 years left. That adds $2m to each year. He saves $6m for the current year as $2m of the original $8m still counts for this year.
Yes he would cost $3.2m next year if a June 1st cut, but he costs $6.1m next year if kept so we still save about $3m next year on him.
But yes that extra $2-3m would help.
