Are Most Permits Money Grabs By The Parish/County?

Getting hvac system replaced in my home. A/C Guy said we can get a permit if we want to, but that it will be more $. He doesn't think it's necessary and neither do I really. We're just replacing old system, not installing completely new one.
Well the gf is freaking out. She said if something goes wrong and say the gas furnace burns down our house, insurance won't cover b/c we didn't get a permit. I've never heard of that and I'm sure there are thousands of unpermitted ac units running all over the country. She also says we'll have trouble selling the house, If we decide to b/c work was done without a permit. I think she's just a hysterical woman and that most permits are just ways for the parish or county to raise money. What says the OT? Should I get a permit?

PS your gf is the smart one of your couple.
PSS the permit is about $50 or so. The dude CANT get it because he's not state licensed contractor.

In all cases; It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission......

He's state licensed. He offered to get one if we really want it. I dont think it's necessary. I dont think any a/c work any of my friends or family has done has been permitted.
It's not really the money but more having to wait around for an "inspector" to come look at the work. Taking a day off already for the work.

yes.
we didn't get a permit for our furnace install, and the guy didn't install to code and it came back when we sold the house.
he fixed it for free but it was a fricking pain in the arse.

I rebuilt a broken fence with a new one two feet away from each other. I got hit with about $2k in fines. Don't do it

I do believe your insurance would be voided if this work leads to a fire, etc and was done without a permit. Did you look the dude up on the state contractors list?

The permit protects you in case you contractor does not install the new one correctly.
Do you know you are supposed to have a permit to replace a water heater or build a fence also??
Personally Id say screw it, but it in place to protect you.

you have to use the same property line, you can't take 2 feet of the easment.

It was actually something like 19'10" from the property line at the 6x6s. The regular fence was 20ft away. I got it surveyed

I called my agent and asked him if i would be covered if I did not get a permit. He said absolutely I would be. He said if that were the case most wouldn't be covered b/c most people don't get permits for a/c, new fences decks, general renovations etc.
