The wife wants to visit her uncle in Harrisburg, PA, but if we go, I'm sure we will want to visit Philly, DC, and NYC at some point.

There are trains connecting most of these cities, correct? Are they a decent form of transportation? Cost? Or should I just rent a car? Although that comes with it's own hassles, liking parking.

I think Harrisburg only has amtrak to NYC. That'll take you to penn station in the heart of manhattan and from there you could go anywhere.

You'd have to drive to DC, park at the end of the metro line in suburban Maryland then take metro into the city.

Probably be better off using something like Megabus than Trains.

As far as DC goes, the metro is very easy to use. Get your a Smart card before you go there. Just wave it in front of the reader when you get on and off.

Amtrak connects all of these cities. It is a nice, comfortable ride. However, it can be costly. When I take the train from NYC to DC, it can cost somewhere between $100-$200 one-way.

Megabus

This is the best option. Harrisburg to philly is $10 it looks like and its about a 2 hr ride. You can take megabus, greyhound, or boltbus once in philly for cheap to boston, nyc, or dc. The bus ride from philly to dc is about 3 hrs, but it drops you off downtown near union station. Philly to boston is a long ride, might want to do philly to nyc, nyc to boston or take amtrak for that.

Would be cheaper and you'd be able to visit more breweries if you rent a car.

I live in DC and between here, Philly and DC probably the buses are the way to go. They're comfortable, cheap and have Wifi. Perfectly reasonable professional clientele for the most part.

Amtrak is good too but a bit pricey.

Never been to Harrisburg but honestly for multiple people renting a car is probably the way to go. If it were just one person the bus or Amtrak might get the nod.

with renting a car comes

cost of renting a car per day
gas
tolls
parking
traffic issues

train is more expensive up front, but it is more reliable and less stress. Philly, DC, and NYC are very walkable and there is no need to have a car. in fact a car can become quite a hassle

yeah that was what I'm trying to avoid

not sure if we would be able to visit everywhere

seems like the easiest thing would be just to take the train to NYC and stay there for a few days instead of trying to visit all 3 cities with just a day or 2 for each

Looks like the Amtrak that runs from Harrisburg actually goes to Philly first. So you could get off there, spend a day there and then take the train up to NYC.

Honestly you can fly for about as cheap as Amtrack costs.

I'd say, depending on how you plan the trip, rent a car to drive from Harrisburg to Philly and DC, then look at taking a train to NYC as you won't want a car there anyway.

Don't know much about Philly, but parking in DC and Harrisburg isn't terrible, and public transit in Harrisburg is nonexistent.

My only knowledge of Amtrak is between Philly and DC, as my brother-in-law makes that trip regularly. I think it's about 2 hours however you slice it, and it does cost between $100-$200 per person.

If you're in Harrisburg while the Senators are playing, I'd recommend checking them out. I worked there last season. The stadium is on an island in the middle of the river. It's a pretty cool setting.

Not sure about DC, but I have family in Philly. We've taken the regional rail to NYC from Philly before. I don't remember the route exactly, but I think you can take SEPTA (Philly rail) to Trenton and switch over to the NJ transit rail and that will take you to Penn Station. It's like $15 each way or something.
