I lived in Harrisburg for about 5 years. I had a car so I didn't use the public transportation extensively.

Harrisburg to Phila. I've use the train for this once. If I remember correctly I was dropped off at 30th street station in PHL. 30th street station is a huge Septa stop. You can get anywhere in Philadelphia from 30th street station.

Harrisburg to NYC. I had friends that would drive to NYC for dinner and drive back in the same day. I've never driven or taken the train there but I know it really isn't that far. You can take the amtrak from harrisburg to NYC but it goes through PHL. I'd imagine it would be a pretty long train ride.

Harrisburg to Baltimore/DC. I've driven down to the last metro stop in Maryland and took the metro in to catch a nationals game. Park at the end of the line for the metro and use DC public transit. Baltimore is a bit closer and I've taken many day trips from Harrisburg to catch Ravens and Orioles games.

3.5 hours. Which is basically the same time it takes to drive.

Things to do in Harrisburg.

If you like amusements parks there is Hershey park just north of Harrisburg.

A short trip to Amish country is amusing for tourist. It's called Lancaster county PA.

Minor League baseball, they used to be called the Senators when I lived there affiliated with the Expos. I think they are now affiliated with the Nationals but they were talking about changing ownership.

Rapist capital of PA if you want to see Sandusky's home. I'll give you the address and you can talk to Dottie Sandusky. State College is about 1.5 hours away. Depending on when you are going to Harrisburg they have different events in State College.

Pittsburgh is 2 hours west. You can take Amtrak out there or just hop on I-76.

If you want to go hiking you can hike part of the Appalachian trail runs through harrisburg/carisle.

I don't remember the route exactly, but I think you can take SEPTA (Philly rail) to Trenton and switch over to the NJ transit rail and that will take you to Penn Station. It's like $15 each way or something.

This. +1. Way cheaper than Amtrak.

You don't want to drive in NYC. Trust me. Between the actual driving, insane drivers, taxis, traffic, parking, tolls, tickets, and red light cameras, its way more hassle than its worth.

The train in the Northeast is expensive. Not worth the cost in my opinion. Might as well rent a car.

If you want to do it on the cheap, there are tons of bus companies that are actually quite nice and inexpensive.

I know. I was saying it's better to just take the train. Although I will have a car in the city out of necessity in a few weeks

I've used the Bolt Bus from DC to NYC a few times...cheaper than the train, but you have to watch your schedule carefully (get the one that goes straight to 33d street)

lived in the Harrisburg area for a couple of years and you're getting good information from posters here...

there is a Pennsylvania commuter train from Harrisburg to points east...

I'm sorry. Get a parking app on your smartphone. Add thirty minutes to get anywhere from what google maps says. Prepare to pay outrageous tolls, and whatever you do avoid the Verrazano Bridge. Last I checked it was $15.00 each way to get across.

Take the train...it's the least hassle....use Amtrak from Harrisburg to Philly and from Philly to DC....for philly to NYC use SEPTA from Philly to Trenton and NJTransit from Trenton to NYC...it's 33 roundtrip I believe vs 70 -100 for Amtrak

Looks like the Amtrak that runs from Harrisburg actually goes to Philly first. So you could get off there, spend a day there and then take the train up to NYC.

That isn't a bad way to go, but when you have to buy train tickets for multiple people a car starts to become better financially, plus it'll let you get around town once you get there.

Maybe the best option is to fly into Philly and rent the car there, driving to Harrisburg. You need one there anyway and in Philly it's still better to have one than not. When you decide to go touring, drive straight to DC. Then drive back up to Philly. When done there, drop the car off and take the bus to NYC and back. Then fly home.

I've done it before. Lincoln Tunnel is $14.00. GW Bridge is $8.00 and RFK Bridge is $6.00 IIRC.

The northeast is the only place in the US public transportation and trains work.

Granted I've only taken the NJ transit from Penn Station to Newark but it wasn't bad.

Amtrak from Harrisburg is best bet to get to Philly. I used to live in Philly and had an internship in Harrisburg and used Amtrak everyday to get out there.

Once you get to Philly then you can either use Amtrak or a bus to go to DC or NYC. Not sure of your budget so do some pricing. There is a way to use Septa (PA local trains) and NJ Transit to go from Philly to NYC. It is cheaper than Amtrak but slow. Here is the link with some info: LINK

If you have the money in the budget then I would take Amtrak to DC. Traffic in DC sucks.
