Texting through GChat

For at least a year now I could text people from my laptop through GChat. But as of two days ago, I cannot. Did Google change something? And does anyone else have this issue?
(I know I could set up a Google Voice account, but I do not currently have phone service to verify my phone number.)

I think you need to add a device application to your Google account. That's what I have to do. It's a security measure.

Not sure, you should check the forums. I've always just used AirDroid because I can do a lot more with it and it's free as well.

Google Voice pushed me to Hangouts months ago for texting. Might want to check that out.....I do about 90% of my texting from my laptop
