Ugh....I agree with the author on a couple of points but the rest is utter bullshite.
I don't have he time or inclination to go through the whole thing. I'll just leave this here.

Hmm..those people in that long line sure seem concerned about having a job. What? Are you telling me that in the paradise that is everywhere except the U.S., Spain can't just mandate that all of their citizens are employed and have income?

There is some truth in the op-ed. Some is undeniable like vacation days.
But at the same time a very thought provoking article in the Economist essentially argued, persuasively, the exact opposite point.
Let me give you an example, I live in Europe and was watching a TV show about a couple having some health problems (there was a happy ending, and it would be too boring to get into the details of the issue at hand, my point is different)...and during the show they kept showing the family house. Large living room. Two cars (five years old, but still two cars). Kids had a lot of toys. Each kid with their own computer plus a family computer in a home office. Guess where these people worked? The guy was a mid level executive at some office supply company and the woman of the household worked part time for some county agency (The assesors office if memory serves) as a secretary. The reason I say this is that I know few people who live like that in Europe.
This takes me back to the Economist article which says that most Europeans who have not been to America (and most have not) if they were to visit NOT one of the Tourist towns like New York or Orlando (Disney) or LA but for some reason spent a week in, say, a suburb of Kansas City, they would be amazed at how good we have it.
I am paraphrasing the Economist but they said something like "The average USA Post Office employee living in a middle American town lives in a bigger house, has more choice in all of his shopping trips, drives a bigger car (possibly with On-Star in it, something Europeans cannot even imagine), has 200 TV channels to watch on a large screen, has more public parks he can visit and takes hotter showers with more water pressure and has more air conditioning than many European Cabinet Ministers, Lawyers, Doctors, etc."
So, there is that view as well.

There are a few nuggets of truth in there... But overall, the "article" is laughable. Look, I get it... You hate the U.S. You think Japan and all the countries mentioned in the blog (which is just some idiot's opinion) are better.
But 70% of tax dollars go to the military? Hmm... Well that's a lot of crap... More like 22%, which is still too much IMHO.

Also, I'm pretty sure the U.S. has a per capita GDP higher than every country he mentions by name in the article, except for Australia. Then, you have to consider that those countries have a higher cost of living. There is an even bigger gap between the U.S. and those countries when it comes to per capita GDP (PPP). The link, and the original post, are complete failures... Way too much misinformation and ignorance in there to be taken seriously.
I've been to Europe, Asia, South America and most of the countries in North America. I still haven't found a place that I'd rather live than the U.S. Now, I could definitely be very happy in Canada, Germany, Switzerland... But I prefer home.
I really hope to make it to OZ/NZ next year... Maybe I'll fall in love with Australia and want to immigrate. I have a sister-in-law there that wants to get back to California ASAP. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Interesting. Thanks for posting. I think there are some un-truths in there BUT overall I think it's an interesting perspective. I think we are a much more miserable society for sure (vacation, depression, fat, fricked-up priorities, etc.)

Japan spends $0 on defense. That's because of the U.S. And I doubt his visits to eastern Europe would be quite so free and secure w/o the U.S.'s presence.

I could give more credence to this if it wasn't part liberal propaganda piece.
Comparing the conservative wing to the Taliban and vilifying the conservative radio hosts and FNC while never once at least mentioning the compliance of the other media entities just isn't in any way shape or form an open minded, unbiased opinion.
And that sucks, because I would like to agree with a lot of it.

It's a biased piece no doubt, but, it does contain some truths. Many Americans live stressful lives, mired in debt, and a car wreck or two pay checks missed from financial ruin. But, it's your choice to live that way. And that's what makes our system great. You don't have to play the 'ever pursuit of things' game. You can live on a farm and grow your own veggies.
Sadly though, the comments about healthcare contain some truths (big pharma incents docs to write prescriptions) and we know now that big brother is alive and well. We've decided to make that trade since 9/11.

jazzy jeff is approaching 60 years old. He left the USA close to 20 years ago to teach English to Japanese kids in Japan.
He's gone totally "native" now. His abject hatred of the USA and all of its citizens is a psychological defense mech to help him not miss home (USA).

americans love working their asses off for a crappy unhappy materialistic life style and will defend it to the death. Just don't infringe up on our right to own what ever type of gun we want and we are good with it.

I still have family in Europe, and have been several times. For all of their so called sophistication, their view of the US is for the most part shaped by their visits to either NYC, CA or Disney World, or by their left wing teachers and media. They had a vague notion of NOLA, mainly because of Katrina, which was of course Bush's fault.
Things that are innately American, like parents volunteering at schools, or coaching teams, or the idea of anybody can go to college, are unfamiliar-for the most part. As are stores opened all day, and into the night, and on Sundays, or "walk in medical clinics".
They really don't have a concept of how big America is, how diverse is it's population.
I love going, but I'm always glad to get home.

I forgot to mention that Jazzy Jeff and boxcare willie are both dedicated Leftists. As such, they both absolutely HATE the USA and all non-Leftists. They both favor totalitarian methods to fundamentally change the USA into a socialist welfare state.
So, unless you like conversing with people who hate you and everything you and the USA stands for, avoid them.
