In light of the recent uproar over Daniel Murphy taking paternity leave on opening day of the baseball season to be with his wife when she had their first baby and how upset some people got who actually thought Boomer was being serious about his C-section comment, I ask the following question:

If you think a baseball player should be able to take paternity leave on opening day of the baseball season to be with his wife when she has their first baby, do you also think a soldier on the battlefield should be given paternity leave to be with his wife when she has their first baby?

If the mission allows for it, we do get paternity leave.

If a soldier is on the battlefield as you say is there any doubt?

Any Commander worth his salt would make this happen, if at all possible.

If engaged in battle, it is likely that most good soldiers worth their salt ... would want to stay in the battle with his comrades, unless ordered to go be with his wife.

If necessary for the soldier to stay with his comrades/fellow soldiers for the success of the mission ... a good soldier will understand and proudly do his duty ... and, if he has a good wife, she will understand ... as will (one day) their first born.

This is not rocket science ... if and when at all possible, you take care of people and allow them to put family first for the moment.

If a soldier is on the battlefield fighting then a good commander will know it is not possible and a good soldier and a good husband will stay and help his fellow soldiers and a good wife will understand and not want him to leave the battlefield to be with her when she has their first child.

Define 'battlefield'. These aren't long, drawn out, WW1 style battles. Of course, if he's actively engaged with the enemy, you're not going to pull him. But most times it's no more than a few days, at most. Send him home as soon as it's prudent.

Birth of child is highly overrated, men would be well advised to miss this "miraculous" event, and first couple of weeks of baby's life are miserable. Deployment seems like great excuse to get out of this.

Hard question to answer, IMHO.

I am deployed and haven't met my first born. I still have a few months left here. As much as I want to see my wife again & hold my baby girl, I don't know if I could have left my guys to another leader.

At the same time, again though, I really want to meet my baby.

It is hard and sucks to watch her grow up on Skype. Eventually this deployment, like others, will end.

I have no opinion on this issue but just wanted to tell you to stay safe over there so your family can look forward to feeling your important presence at home again soon.

tough question, on one hand an inventor should certainly be present to receive a patent. However, if it is one of these flimsy web patents for clicking the left side of an animated cow to receive a free chicken sandwich, I don't think that warrants abandoning the battlefront against those who want to kill us because they hate our freedom. So no in that case...

First off, why just the first baby? I would think number two, three, etc. would be just as important as number one.

Secondly, I would have no real objections to a serviceman getting a few days off for a birth but only if it is on his own dime. Taxpayers shouldn't have to foot the bill for any expenses involved in getting him back home and then back to his base.

Another question - what's the procedure when there is a death that a soldier wants to attend the funeral? Does only immediate family deaths carry weight?

First, most deployed soldier probably has a shitload of built-up leave due to him.

Second, it is likely that planes are going back/forth all the time anyway ... one more passenger ain't gonna break your piggybank, Captain America.

Agreed, as long as he receives no personal expenses incurred during his leave that the taxpayers have to pay for. It's not their baby but his.

This smartass retort wasn't necessary. I've made a couple of thousand dollars worth of donations to the local college's ROTC program over the last 3-4 years. I try my best to show support for our troops. People like you make me think otherwise sometimes though.

So long as we have to support millions of deadbeats with food stamps, WIC, SNAP, etc ... I ain't gonna lose sleep if John Q. helps out a Soldier every now and then.
