Great article written about spearfishing, in particular Abbie. I've dove with he once before and known her for a few years now, this article was done very well.

There aren't many moments in hunting or fishing when you get to look a critter in the eyes from just a couple of feet away before you kill it. It's not scared of you. In fact, the opposite should be true: You should be afraid, very afraid. When you're spearfishing, the beasts of the ocean have all the advantages. You simply have to have the moxie to step into the ring.

Nicely written article – I don’t know Abbie well but dove w/ her mom, dad and uncle for a number of years and the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Got to watch those big AJs they always seem to come back to life and you better be ready. If you have shot a big AJ, grouper or lemonfish we have all had those come to Jesus moments.

I got my biggest at 160' and was able to get to a pipe at 120' before he came to life

You just latch on and wait for it to stop swimming?

Basically, yes
Sounds like this would lead to a lot of deaths.... admittedly know nothing about the topic, how dangerous is this?

Its not for the meek but most deaths are due to some one doing something stupid or making a mistake. You always have to remember that no fish is worth your life, you can always let go of the gun or the shaft or the fish (depending on your setup). Shot placement is key on big fish - you want to kill them or seriously wound them w/ that shot. But for 10 lb snapper its not an issue. From an insurance standpoint when I got life insurance years ago they asked my hobbies and I said diving and they agent probed more and found out I spearfished - he said the risk they categorize that at is the same as amateur race car drivers, sky divers and rodeo - IMO those people are f'n nuts - I just went for a swim and shot a few fish

There's an awesome book on rig diving/spearfishing by local writer Humberto Fontova, called "The Helldivers' Rodeo." Easily the best outdoors book I've read.

Thanks for that link. I wasn't aware of his other books. Just saw that he has one called "The Hellpig Hunt." Ordered it on Amazon. Back when I used to read La. Sportsman , every time I got a new issue I would immediately check for articles written by Fontova. Dude is hilarious.

Hellpig Hunt is awesome as well!
for people that don't dive or spearfish its usually a little more enjoyable because they can relate
